Cavill Hanging Up His Red Cape and More…

It looks like Henry Cavill has officially moved on from the DC extended universe.

Due to scheduling conflicts that did not allow the British actor to make a cameo in Shazam, a new commitment to The Witcher series, and DC focusing on a much younger version of Clark Kent in The Supergirl movie, THR

It just seems like the time is right for the actor move on. It is also the perfect opportunity for DC to tweak their formula for the movies. I still believe there is something about the Arrowverse and other DC TV shows that allows them to grab the attention of and sustain its fans. The movies just have to figure what that magic ingredient is…writing!

Cavill

He definitely has a flair for the dramatic.

Will you miss Henry Cavill as Superman?

I will miss him in glasses.

Continuing with Casting News, Katherine Langford of 13 Reasons Why and Love, Simon will star in Netflix’ Cursed. If you do not know about the project, here is some info from a March press release:

Cursed is based on an upcoming book of the same name, Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue (portrayed by Katherine Langford), a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther. There are 10 episodes slated.

Netflix has shifted from its touting of young love to all things that go bump in the night thanks to the new show, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Sabrina This is not the Sabrina you grew up with and if you want to get a little background on this character before the premiere, check out the comic series at your local comic book shop.

One of the best things about British TV is that it likes to dip a toe into classic sci-fi and it ends up churning out some of the best shows on TV. So, when we heard that HBO was going to co-produce and distribute His Dark Materials, I was ecstatic.  His Dark Materials is an epic trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman which consist of Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. The series revolves around two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry. We follow their adventures as they wander through a series of parallel universes.

The cast includes Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Deadline

There is another Book to Small Screen to make note of and it is because Netflix is continuing to ride the tails of the recent successes of their teen-centric films:

NETFLIX ACQUIRES DUMPLIN’

Netflix has acquired the film “Dumplin’,” which features collaborations and original music from entertainment industry icon Dolly Parton.

Film Release Date: The film will be released later this year on Netflix in the U.S. and select international territories, and in select theaters in the U.S.

With that said, Deadline stated that the co-owners of The Ripped Bodice Bookstore have signed with Sony Pictures TV to develop TV projects based on their close relationship with romance novel authors and readers.

I do think that the  acquisitions of movies based on YA, chick lit, and a slew of other literary genres is incredibly smart. They acquire the rights to books that have a fandom in place and the numbers to prove that they are certifiable hits. It gives us, as moviegoers, a nice break from all the sequels, superhero, horror, and action heavy movies at the theaters.

Besides the whole debacle with Henry Cavill ties with DC, it seems like another comic book based property is also having a scandalous moment. American Gods, Starz, has lost its second show runner. To be fair, the cast and whomever is left is making it their business to keep everything going in hopes of getting the show on the small screen in 2019. Digital Spy

Before I go off on a laughing camel, I forgot to post the latest trailer for Daredevil’s third season.

Ok. That’s it for me.

The Doctor is Going to a Galaxy Far, Far Away and More…

Quiet day, news-wise.

However, we did get the best news about our favorite Doctor, Eleven, and that is that Matt Smith has been cast in the last chapter of the Skywalker saga. No details, as of yet, about his character. Is he a rebel or is he part of the First Order? We shall see… Variety

Luckily, this comes as Matt Smith has taken his bow as Prince Philip in The Crown. Who is taking over for him? Outlander‘s Tobias Menzies.

There are some people that are upset that DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will not be participating in the annual crossover event that, until now, has involved all of the Arrowverse shows. Yet, they forget that we will be meeting both Batgirl and Lois Lane. We will also have Superman involved. Loop in the full casts of Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl and their story line for this crossover event, well…there would be no real air time to devote to our favorite superhero misfits.

Mind you, LoT will have their hands full with Constantine as one of the newest members of the team. So, do not be too sad.

While fans, cast, and crew of the Big Bang Theory continue to lament the demise of the popular comedy, the rest of the TV-verse moves on…

Casting News:

Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott will be returning to the American Horror Story franchise in its latest installment. THR

We also learned that Sarah Paulson will be playing three characters in the upcoming season:

“Sarah Paulson, who apparently just likes to one-up herself at this point, is taking on triple duty in American Horror Story: Apocalypse. The acclaimed actress will not only be reprising her roles as Murder House‘s Billie Dean and Coven‘s Cordelia, but she’ll also debut a new character, the mysterious Venable.” TVG

The upcoming Apocalypse season will be a cross over between the Coven season and the Murder House season. We did get the following to corroborate that statement:

This should be an interesting series to watch as it involves the end times. God help us all.

But, there seems to be a theme to all of these seasons:

Say it ain’t so, FP! We knew that having Juggie beat up in the end of last season would have ripple effects for this upcoming season and we learn that that is the case.

“The fallout from Jughead’s beatdown from the Ghoulies and the next stage of Hiram Lodge’s (Mark Consuelos) plan to take over Riverdale — which includes some staff changes at Pops — will be a little bit too much for FP to take in the Season 2 finale and he’ll find comfort in his old vices. Ulrich confided in TV Guide that FP’s backslide is an “interesting emotional answer” to the drama consuming the town.” TVG

HBO has given us a little nugget about the upcoming prequel of Game of Thrones:

“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

If you watched the first season of The Gifted (FOX), like I did, than you probably had a couple of questions about the timeline and where the heroes of the show land in the X-Men universe timeline. With the upcoming season of Arrow possibly being the hardest on all the main characters, it will be especially hard on our favorite tech nerd, Felicity. She will be dealing with Oliver’s absence, as he is in jail for the first few months of the season. But, she will try to focus on a business, Smoak Tech. TVL

News You May Have Missed…

The biggest news to those that love books to the small screen adaptations is that HBO is adapting Audrey Niffenegger’s novel “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and Doctor Who’s  and Sherlock’s Steven Moffat is at the helm of the project!

The channel that flip-flops the most and still manages to keep a fandom unhappy, NBC  has reversed its cancellation of the beloved Timeless. However, it is not for a new season. Nope! What we are getting is a two-part event that will close out the series during the holidays. It’s something for a fandom (one of many) that was campaigning for the show to be revived at any network.

Here is the official press release from NBC:

b1a8269efeb25141_800x800ar

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – July 31, 2018 – Hey Clockblockers, your mission is complete!

NBC and Sony Pictures Television are collaborating on a two-part “Timeless” finale to air during the holidays, giving closure to the globetrotting series that has generated incredible viewer passion.

According to executive producers Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke, audiences can expect the “Timeless” they know and love. A focus on the unsung and underrepresented people of history. And most importantly, one final emotional story for the Time Team.

“We’re excited to tell one final chapter to this incredible story,” said Lisa Katz, Co-President, Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment. “A huge thank you to all – our cast, crew, producers and partners at Sony – who have worked so very hard, and to the fans who kept us on our toes and made sure we did our very best week after week.”

“While we wish we could’ve made another dozen seasons of ‘Timeless,’ this is the next best thing,” said Ryan and Kripke. “We’re thrilled to take the Lifeboat out for one last spin and bring closure to our story. The studio, network, cast and crew are all doing this for one reason only: the fans. Because they deserve it. Because the fans made this happen and we thank them for their passion, support and helicopters. So? You guys want to get Rufus back or what?”

The cast includes Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, Goran Višnjić, Paterson Joseph, Sakina Jaffrey and Claudia Doumit.

Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke are the creators, writers and executive producers. Tom Smuts and Arika Lisanne Mittman are co-showrunners and executive producers. Don Kurt, Greg Beeman, John Davis, John Fox and Marney Hochman also executive produce.

“Timeless” is a production of Sony Pictures Television, Davis Entertainment, MiddKid Productions and Kripke Enterprises.

Casting news: From an orange jumpsuit (Orange is the New Black) to a magical creature on The Magicians, Jolene Purdy will be playing Shoshana, a maenad. She is a bright and highly emotional magical creature tasked with tending to notorious party god Bacchus; she stands as gatekeeper between the deity and an old buddy who desperately seeks him. Deadline

As a reminder, the first season of Marvel’s Runaways will be airing on Freeform, the first episode will air after the season finale of the both critic and favorite Cloak and Dagger.

Marvel.jpg

After seeing the success of Cloak and Dagger, Marvel is hoping to see an uptick in interest for Marvel’s Runways, which originally aired on Hulu. Will this work? Well, both shows got a second season order. But, will they see that they may have to go much more darker to achieve their goal? Have you noticed that the Netflix’ Marvel assets that have been successful are all very dark? The shows that have struggled are lacking the gravitas of characters that are suffering because they have to balance their desire to be what they want to be or want out of life and what humanity needs them to be. These types of  shows are much more human. So, they have to figure out a way to make Runaways much more relatable to their audience.

Season Two of Castlevania Will be Back in Time for Halloween

Castlevania is an American anime-esque animated series that is based on a popular 80’s video game of the same name. In it, we follow Trevor Belmont try to defend Wallachia from Dracula.

The new season will premiere on October 26th and we’ll have eight episodes to enjoy his time around.

We also learned that season 3 of the popular series has already started production.

The cast includes:

Richard Armitage (Ocean’s Eight and Berlin Station) is the Hero, Trevor Belmont. Trevor is the last member of the Belmonts, a family of monster hunters.

James Callis (Battlestar Galactic and Austenland) is Alucard (Dracula backwards), the son of Dracula and Lisa Tepes. Unlike his dear old Dad, Alucard wants to protect humanity.

Graham McTavish (Outlander and Preacher) is Dracula. The Vampire that has sworn vengeance against humanity for the death of his beloved Lisa.

Alejandra Reynoso (Winx Club) is Sypha Belnades. She is an elder’s daughter that has powerful magic and becomes Trevor’s ally.

We learn why Dracula wanted to kill the Bishop and we see Trevor and Sypha work with the locals to battle Dracula. During the battle, Trevor and Sypha fall deep in to the catacombs and eventually cross paths with Alucard. Trevor and Alucard fight, but once Alucard sees that Sypha and Trevor want to help humanity fight his father, he decides to join their fight.

This is a great animated series for adults, as it is too gory for children. However, I do suggest you take some time to watch it. The first season is only four episodes long, but it is great storytelling and visually.

…Wait…Here is the Inside Look at Amazon’s Good Omens for #SDCC

The show is based on the book Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. It was written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman and it kind of reads like Monty Python or the Hitchhiker’s Guide…very funny…very British.

Here’s a little info on the premise of the book:

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel (Aziraphale) and a fast-living demon (Crowley) are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. So, they attempt to sabotage it because they like their comfy lived in merry old England.  And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist and then there is the issue of the Four Horsemen.

I suggest that if you are looking forward to the show, give the book a shot. You will not regret it!

#SDCC Ends with Legion

Legion wrapped towards the end of the 17-18 TV season, so this panel was for more for those die hard fans who are still recovering from season 2.

When describing the trippy style of the the show, John Cameron told the audience, “When you get the script, and you’ve read it, you have to start to ask everyone on the cast and crew, ‘do you know what this is about?’ It takes a village…directors are told to bring their A game.” Trippy is an understatement.

We learnt that even the cast is confused as Navid Negahban, Shadow King, thanked the cast for helping him understand the show when he first joined the cast. “These guys already had the blueprint. I was just following their lead.”

While Dan Stevens acknowledged that the fans are rooting for the roller coaster of a love story that is David and Syd . “It’s the mark of a good story,” He stated. He also believes that Syd is mad that he ran off with Lenny. Rachel Keller is more interested in wanting to see Syd tackle something as big as being the hero, but she’d also like to see what she does, if she fails.

Aubrey Plaza believes that Lenny is just trying to get out there and live her best life. But she just got caught up in the middle of all this nonsense. Lenny is now a totally different character because Lenny died. She is playing a new version of Lenny.

In regards to David’s Ride or Die, Lenny, Aubrey Plaza

There were fun moments like when the cast was asked which superhero they would be and it is as follows:

  • Dan Stevens: “Batgirl.” <–I would pay to see this!
  • Rachel Keller: “Wolverine.”
  • Aubrey Plaza: “Joker”
  • Jean Smart: “Catwoman.”
  • Bill Irwin: “Noah Hawley.”
  • Amber Midthudner: “Violet from The Incredibles.” <–Awesome Choice!
  • Jeremie Harris: “Batman”
  • Navid Negahban: “Shazam.”

Bill Irwin pulled he choreography together for the dance sequence, which was nightmarish for Aubrey Plaza. We also learned that Bill wants the familial bond between him and and Amber Midthunder to continue. That sounded like a request to the writers.

On that point, Dan Stevens said that going to Comic-Con is the only way he gets information about the upcoming season on the show that he is working on.

If you have not seen this show, give it a chance.
