Recap: Riverdale – Labor Day

Riverdale

What is most surprising about this episode is that these kids were just becoming Juniors in High School. Was the courtroom somewhere in the deep south in the 1950s?  Because there is no A/C anywhere. Also, who would allow Archie’s own mother to be his defense attorney?

Welcome to Riverdale… and it is the weekend before Archie finds out if he will be convicted of murder. This little reprieve allows Archie to have one last perfect summer weekend with his love and his two best friends, but not before we get an update about what is going on in each household.

Veronica and Hiram are still butting heads, this time over the fate of Archie. She is even willing to go after jurors to throw her father under the bus in order to save Archie. However, Hermione confessed that she is no puppet to Hiram, just a prisoner. She will never leave Veronica alone in this world.

Alice is drinking the Kool-Aid that the Farm is doling out and she is driving Betty nuts with her attempts to bring her into the fold. However, we find out that Betty has been illegally forging a prescription for adderall and lying about seeing a therapist.

Fred is at a loss over Archie possibly being convicted. He and Mary blame themselves over everything that has happened.  Yet, no matter what anyone says…Archie feels all alone in this because he feels guilty for leaving Cassidy with Andre. So, he spends the weekend prepping everyone for their new roles while he is away. Betty is to look after Fred, Reg is to look after the football team, etc…

Jughead is the King of the Serpents and thanks to Hotdog and Cheryl wanting to be Katniss Everdeen, a new war is brewing. The crown is heavy on his head, but he is committed to keeping his friends, family, and those that rely on him safe. Even if he is no longer a southsider.

The deliberations are heavy on everyone’s minds as the weekend comes to a close, but when the jury comes back in a deadlock of six to six, Archie agrees to take a plea deal that he believes would save everyone from another long and arduous trial. What he leaves behind are loved ones that are shocked and heartbroken over his decision.

But, the sexy Dads of Riverdale are working together to get back at Hiram and to get Archie out of jail. Veronica learns from Hiram that this whole thing is punishment for her turning her back on blood. This is when Veronica draws the line in the sand and declares that she is no longer his daughter. We then see Archie leaving the town with Pep as he heads to the hoosegow.

Now, this is when it gets really weird. Dilton Doyle is acting all kinds of weird, weirder than usual. Why? The Gargoyle King. He leaves behind this map for Jug and when Jug follows the map, he finds Dilton and Ben kneeling in front of a something that looks like a horned creature made out of bones. Ben and Dilton have ingested something that has them out and Jug is at a loss as he tries to help them. Think Slenderman meets D&D.

The weirdness level goes up a notch when Betty wakes up in the middle of the night and hears a noise in the yard and that is when she finds Alice and Polly in a ceremony where they hold the twins over a fire and let them go…the twins float in the air and this…well this is too much for Betty’s brain to handle, so she drops and convulses.

It is what happens in the last moments that grabbed me. While, the soap opera-like story arcs are entertaining…how much can these kids go through when they are just turning 16 and starting the whole process of preparing for SATs and thinking about what colleges they want to go to and what it will take to get into those colleges. Is there a Riverdale College?

The other cool thing about the episode is the nods to the comics, like Hot Dog, we saw the jalopy, and we heard the name of Edgar Evernever and with him…we will see Evelyn.

Curb Your Stranger Things Withdrawal …and more news…

I know many of us are not thrilled about waiting a bit longer to see a new season of Stranger Things on Netflix. Back in June, we learned that we were going to get a series of books in the Fall that would help us deal with with the withdrawal. Well, the books are in and they will go one sale on October 30, 2018.

Casting News:

Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott will be returning to the American Horror Story franchise in its latest installment. THR

We also learned that Sarah Paulson will be playing three characters in the upcoming season:

“Sarah Paulson, who apparently just likes to one-up herself at this point, is taking on triple duty in American Horror Story: Apocalypse. The acclaimed actress will not only be reprising her roles as Murder House‘s Billie Dean and Coven‘s Cordelia, but she’ll also debut a new character, the mysterious Venable.” TVG

The upcoming Apocalypse season will be a cross over between the Coven season and the Murder House season. We did get the following to corroborate that statement:

This should be an interesting series to watch as it involves the end times. God help us all.

But, there seems to be a theme to all of these seasons:

Tyler Hoechlin will return to play the Man of Steele in the upcoming crossover event for the Arrowverse on the CW. We will also get to meet Lois Lane! Syfy

Say it ain’t so, FP! We knew that having Juggie beat up in the end of last season would have ripple effects for this upcoming season and we learn that that is the case.

“The fallout from Jughead’s beatdown from the Ghoulies and the next stage of Hiram Lodge’s (Mark Consuelos) plan to take over Riverdale — which includes some staff changes at Pops — will be a little bit too much for FP to take in the Season 2 finale and he’ll find comfort in his old vices. Ulrich confided in TV Guide that FP’s backslide is an “interesting emotional answer” to the drama consuming the town.” TVG

Here is the upcoming trailer for The Man in the High Castle:

New Shows:

Apple has given Isaac Asimov’s Foundation a 10-episode straight-to-series order. Variety

HBO has given us a little nugget about the upcoming prequel of Game of Thrones:

“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

For more information about the upcoming series, keep an on George R.R. Martin’s blog and on HBO.

If you watched the first season of The Gifted (FOX), like I did, than you probably had a couple of questions about the timeline and where the heroes of the show land in the X-Men universe timeline. In the upcoming second season, we will actually learn about Thunderbird’s connection to the X-Men. Keep an eye out for this in the third episode. TVG

With the upcoming season of Arrow possibly being the hardest on all the main characters, it will be especially hard on our favorite tech nerd, Felicity. She will be dealing with Oliver’s absence, as he is in jail for the first few months of the season. But, she will try to focus on a business, Smoak Tech. TVL

  1. Will you be watching The Innocents on Netflix?

New Shows, Casting News, and The Return of Veronica Mars?

Happy Hump Day!

I started off blogging when True Blood came out, so I have always kept tabs on the cast since the show ended. Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies, True Blood, Generation Kill) is slated to appear in The Little Drummer Girl by John le Carré. This production is a joint venture between the BBC and AMC, similar to the partnership for The Night Manager.

From the Press Release:

NEW YORK, NY – August 21, 2018 – AMC today announced “The Little Drummer Girl,” will premiere in the U.S. as a must-watch, three-night television event with a two-hour episode on November 19 at 9:00 P.M. ET/PT. Additional two-hour episodes will air on consecutive nights at 9:00 P.M. ET/PT on November 20 and November 21.

Based on John le Carré’s best-selling literary masterpiece of the same name, “The Little Drummer Girl” is a six-part miniseries starring Emmy® and Golden Globe®Award-winner Alexander Skarsgård (“Big Little Lies”) as Becker, twice Academy Award-nominated and Tony-nominated Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water, Nocturnal Animals) as Kurtz and BAFTA-nominated Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) as Charlie.

Blurring the fine lines between love and hate; truth and fiction; and right and wrong; “The Little Drummer Girl” weaves a suspenseful and explosive story of espionage and high-stakes international intrigue. Set in the late 1970s, the pulsating thriller follows Charlie (Pugh), a fiery actress and idealist whose resolve is tested after she meets the mysterious Becker (Skarsgård,) while on holiday in Greece. It quickly becomes apparent that his intentions are not what they seem, and her encounter with him entangles her in a complex plot devised by the spy mastermind Kurtz (Shannon). Charlie takes on the role of a lifetime as a double agent while remaining uncertain of her own loyalties.

“The Little Drummer Girl,” which hails from the executive producers of the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning series “The Night Manager,” marks the television debut of visionary filmmaker Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden, Stoker) and was filmed at locations including the streets of London and Prague and architectural phenomena such as the Acropolis in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon in Greece’s Attica Peninsula.

Fans of Veronica Mars, I’m one, Rejoice! Hulu, is in talks to revive, not reboot, Veronica Mars. The best part is…Kristen Bell would slip on her gumshoes again. EW

Casting News:

  1. Anthony Michael Hall has been cast the Principal of Riverdale High when the Foursome’s parents were students:Riverdale
  2. Karen David (Once Upon a Time, Galavant, Timeless) has been cast to play Emma Tig on the CW’s Legacies. Emma is a beautiful witch-turned-guidance counselor, she is the moral support and shoulder to cry on for all the students at the Salvatore School, even if the person who needs her therapy the most (the headmaster) remains an elusive patient. Deadline
  3. iZombie has lured Kareen Abdul-Jabar to play Zed, one of the two City Council members who didn’t flee after the zombie endemic broke out in Seattle. And while Zed is a zombie, his fellow council member is human — the two are unable to compromise or understand each other’s perspectives that city hall basically is rendered inert. TVGuide
  4.  Inbar Lavi has been cast as “The Original Sinner” Eve on Lucifer. Her backstory is that, “After an eternity with Adam, she’s grown restless in her marriage and longs for a less predictable time when things were exciting. Naughty. Dangerous. She misses her hot and heavy first love…the charming rogue who tempted her so many years ago. That’s right, the devil himself…Lucifer.” TVLine
  5. Brendan Fraser, The Mummy, has been cast as Robotman/Cliff Steele, in the DCU’s live-action series Doom Patrol.  Deadline

Shows Ordered to Series, Renewed, or Cancelled:

  1. We now know when The CW will air their annual crossover for their Arrow-verse:crossover
  2. Netflix has renewed The End of the F*!king World for a second season and Anne with an E for a third season. Both great shows.
  3. Not only will we get Batman on Gotham, but we may get Bane. Comicbook.com
  4. Watchmen has been ordered by HBO. The graphic novel by Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins, revolved around a superhero team as they seem to decay alongside the ever-darkening America around them. The team consists of Rorschach, Nite Owl, the Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias and we see them reunite in order to investigate who’s behind a teammate’s murder, but what they find out may be even more grim than the world they seek to protect. The cast includes: Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon. The show will air in 2019 and is produced and written by Damon Lindelof.

Odds and Ends:

When Stranger Things returns, it will be inspired by Fletch! Variety

A show to watch is Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Even though I prefer the character of John Clark, Jack Ryan is the every man that works at the CIA and is thrust in to impossible scenarios and somehow comes out of it alive. In the premiere, CIA analyst Jack Ryan uncovers a series of suspicious transactions that take him and his boss James Greer out from behind their desks into the field to hunt down… The show will air on Amazon on August 31st!

If you love Rom-Coms, go watch To All the Boys that I’ve Loved Before on Netflix. It takes us back to a time when the story of girl and boy work together to either fend off the advances of one person or to get someone super jealous after they break it off and ultimately realize that the person they should be focusing on is the one that is helping them out. If you are on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or whatever…than you have seen the posts dedicated to Peter Kavinsky. But, the whole cast did a great job and I hope they make this a trilogy!
