What You Missed…

Barring Iron Fist, the Marvel shows on Netflix have proven to be fan favorites. So, it came as a surprise to everyone when Netflix cancelled Luke Cage.

In a joint formal statement by Netflix and Marvel:

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

Since the end of the second season, the showrunner, writers, and actors assumed there would be a third season and scripts were created for that additional season. However, since September, issues arose as the third season was reduced to 10 episodes and tensions arose over the new scripts. Variety

There are two reasons that this may have happened:

  1. They could be developing a series called Heroes for Hire, which is a comic book series that focused on Luke Cage and Iron Fist. GeekTyrant
  2. This could all come down to the fact that Marvel/Disney are formulating their plans to create their own streaming service. By slowly picking off the Marvel properties, Netflix is severing ties with the media giant and future rival.

Now, if Netflix is not developing a Heroes for Hire show, then the question is if another tv/cable channel or a streaming service will snap up the popular show or could the character of Luke Cage pop up in another Marvel property?

EPIX’s Pennyworth is in a full casting swing as it has the following:

JACK BANNON SET TO STAR IN TITLE ROLE OF “PENNYWORTH” FOR EPIX AND WARNER HORIZON SCRIPTED TELEVISION, BASED ON THE CHARACTERS FROM DC

Drama from Executive Producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon to Begin Production Monday, October 22, 2018, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK

· Jack Bannon (The Imitation Game, Ripper Street) has been cast in the lead role of Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming EPIX drama series PENNYWORTH, from Warner Horizon Scripted Television and based on the characters from DC.

· The 10-episode, one-hour drama series is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger. It follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier in his 20s, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne, who’s not yet Bruce’s father, in 1960s London.

· Alfred Pennyworth is a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty; you’d never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.

The show has also cast the following:

  • Thomas Wayne – Ben Aldridge
  • Dave Boy – Ryan Fletcher
  • Bazza – Hainsley Lloyd Bennett

Fletcher and Bennett will portray Dave Boy and Bazza, respectively; both are lifelong friends of Alfred’s from their army days serving in the same corps. Dave Boy, a haggard Highland Scotsman who is slowly drinking himself to death since leaving the army, is a close ally of Alfred and Bazza and also the most unpredictable of the trio. Bazza, a posh Bajan playboy, is highly proficient at logistics and a valued member of Alfred’s team.

Now on to the mysterious demise of Dramafever. Asian Drama fans are beside themselves as the streaming service was quickly shut down by Warner Brothers. They cited the competition they were facing from streaming services like Viki, Hulu, and Netflix. While it was a sudden and quick shutdown. Fans of the series should seek out refunds for their premium accounts. Also, if they look hard enough, you can catch up with your favorite shows.

What this means for Asian dramas in the United States and beyond…channels like TVN will need to find a new outlet to showcase their dramas so they reach the masses that want this type of fare.

Reviews:

In Doctor Who’s second episode, The Ghost Monument, we find our our fearsome foursome have been split apart and picked up by two ships that are in the midst of a dakar-style race. While one of the competitors is looking for fortune and glory, the other is trying to protect her family. The goal was for someone to reach the Ghost Monument successfully after going through a gauntlet of obstacles. However, with the Doctor and her friends there, it causes a bit of a wrench for the alien that maintains the race.

We see the Doctor and her friends learn more about one another as they excel at problem-solving and going out of their comfort range. However, while 13 is supportive, she is also protective of her new friends. She even scolded Ryan as he attempted to be a hero in a Halo-like moment and told him the importance of zig-zagging.

We also learned in the episode that the Stenza are a force to be a reckoned with and possibly the main bad guy for 13 during this season. How unfortunate that is…the teeth on the face..yeesh.

The highlight of the episode was when 13 saw her Tardis. It had me in tears. These first moments for all of the Timelords are so iconic. She sees that the Tardis has gussied herself up, with a change to both her exterior and interior. My favorite moment was when she got a biscuit. Now, they are all safe and sound on the Tardis and 13 is aiming to get them home.

However, in the next episode…The Doctor and her friends meet a seamstress by the name of Rosa Parks.

It’s unfortunate that the numbers are low for Arrow as it is showing some stellar moments for the three main characters of the show, Oliver, Felicity, and William.

This family is in crisis as they are dealing with the repercussion of Oliver’s decision to go to jail. Felicity and William are in an A.R.G.U.S.’ witness protection program with new identities and living lives that they do not want to live, as Oliver tries to keep his head down in prison. This is nearly impossible as all the criminals he has jailed are in there and are aiming to kill him. This new life falls apart when Diaz tracks down Felicity and William. In a heartbreaking moment, we see one of the thugs in jail tell Oliver that his wife is dead…but she is not dead. She fights back and just as all hope is lost, A.R.G.U.S. show up. When Felicity and Oliver see one another…that is love. Now, both of them have decided to stop hiding and fight back, while William is set off to boarding school.

Now, I know that I have not been a fan of the flashbacks…yet, this season we get something different. We get a flashforward of a young man going to Lian Yu and that young man is William and he is on the hunt for a much older…Roy?!?!? This was clever, I have to give them this.

Now, is Roy the new vigilante that is stalking the streets of this city? Only time will tell.

I really do hope that there are some moments of happiness for these characters. There can only be so much these characters and these fans can deal with.

In Blocked, the second episode of The Flash, we are dealing with five plot points:

  1. While Nora informs everyone about why she is really there. Iris is okay and understands why Nora wants to be so close to Barry, but she wants to have a relationship with her daughter. So, watching Nora (a new intern) and Barry work on the crime scene of the escaped convict who used her power to crush someone into a meat cube, it is heartbreaking. However, Barry is going a little nutty with his daughter always around him. Leave it to Papa Joe to make both Iris and Barry understand that they need to give Nora this time and that she will come around and relax eventually.  Eventually, Nora proved herself.
  2. Cisco recovering from heartbreak – When you are forced to follow the 12 step heartbreak recovery of Ralph Dibney, it is never good. But, it is great for laughs. Eventually, he gets that he and gypsy are no more.
  3. Cecilia losing her power and can no longer connect with her daughter causes her to do the unthinkable and that is to use one of Harry’s devices to regain that connection, but Joe’s parenting skills show her the way.
  4. Finding out who the big bad is while fighting a meta who steals high-tech weapons and that villain is named Cicada, whom we meet in the first scene of the episode. He kills the meta, but he also manages to drain The Flash, Ralph, and Cisco of their powers. The great thing was that Nora was able to save her father before any real harm could come to him. After seeing footage, they now have connected Cicada to two events that revolved around Team Flash. Nora knows who it is and Cicada knows Nora.
  5. Caitlin does not want to investigate her Dad’s certificate of death because it means that he did not bother to be a part of her life, if he was alive. Cisco tells her that there is still time to make amends.

Overall, a great episode that is trying to balance the heavy plot points, with the heartfelt and with levity. Go Team West-Allen!

Remember, this weekend is all about Daredevil!
