All the News that You Missed…

There are a couple of casting bits that may be of interest to you:

For fans of The Terror series, Derek Mio will be the lead in the upcoming second season. His character is named Chester Nakayama, the son of Japanese born immigrants who has dreams of leaving his insular Japanese-American community and joining the army. Throughout the season, Nakayama transforms from a naïve kid to a war hero. Deadline

If you stayed up to see the new episodes of Daredevil on Netflix, than you saw a new face in the mix (besides Bullseye and all the other Feds). Peter Halpin has been cast to play Foogy’s little brother, Theo Nelson. Theo works in the family’s Butcher shop in Hell’s Kitchen.  Deadline

Apple TV viewers, Christian Camargo and Hera Miller have joined See as series regulars. The show stars Jason Momoa,  Sylvia Hoeks, and Alfre Woodard. It is an epic, world-building drama set in the future. Camargo will portray Tamacti Jun, the head of Queen Kane’s army. Hilmar is Maghra will portray a determined mother. Den of Geek

Good news for Supergirl fans, Lex Luthor will be making his way to the show in its 4th season. We still do not know who will be portraying the infamous villain. EW

Also, everyone who follows TV shows are speculating about what will come out of the Elseworlds Arrowverse crossover event. Some are saying that The CW will be assessing how the fans react to the new characters that will pop up, like Lois Lane and Batwoman. Will we get a seventh night of programming? Only time will tell. Nothing has been confirmed.

Would you want more Superhero shows or would you prefer something different? Like…

The CW continues with its fun programming. The latest to go into development is a Dorian Gray based show where the protagonist is a female and it’s a comedy. Yes…yes…I know. Dorian Gray is not a comedy. However, in this version Dorian is about a woman who made a deal with the devil 50 years ago to remain young has spent the subsequent decades living selfishly and without consequences. As the downsides of eternal youth finally land on her, Dorian is ready to grow up and age gracefully, but, to do so, she’ll have to make amends for half a century of bad behavior. Variety

In the original story, Dorian Gray is the subject of a full-length portrait in oil by Basil Hallward, an artist who is impressed and infatuated by Dorian’s beauty; he believes that Dorian’s beauty is responsible for the new mood in his art as a painter. Through Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, and he soon is enthralled by the aristocrat’s hedonistic world view: that beauty and sensual fulfillment are the only things worth pursuing in life.

Newly understanding that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied and amoral experiences, while staying young and beautiful; all the while his portrait ages and records every sin. Let’s just say that it does not end well for old Dorian.

If you did not read it in High School, along with Dracula and Frankenstein, I suggest you pick it up. Especially since Dorian is a popular character to add to ensemble Gothic shows or movies…think Penny Dreadful and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Also check out the movie Dorian Gray with Ben Barnes.

Netflix listened and one show has been axed…and more.

Iron Fist was cancelled. It suffered from the get-go due to poor casting, lackluster scripts, and even though the second season was better, the show did not have enough fan fervor to get it a third season. However, the series ended with a good enough ending that should leave fans satisfied with the main characters off on their own respective adventures.

This is a first for Netflix, as the Marvel-based shows have been a cornerstone for the success of the streaming service. While we are waiting for the third season of Daredevil to start and have been promised a third season for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, and a second season for The Punisher…we shall wait to see if we will get another crossover event like The Defenders.

Will you miss Danny Rand and Colleen Wing? Do you think we will see these characters again?

I got to watch the premiere of Supernatural and it was nice to see a lot of old faces…like Bobby and the human Lucifer. However, while it was interesting to see the dynamic of Sam leading this group to maintain some order in this world, as he is looking for Dean…it was Dean that was the best part of the show. Well…not Dead, per se, more like the visage of Dean as the Archangel Michael inhabits the vessel of Dean. He’s asking these questions about what people want.

What is he getting at by asking these questions? Other than that, it is just the same ole thing. The show needs to change it up a bit to gain momentum and keep the fans engaged. Especially since they do not have Dean to swoon over. This is reflected in the numbers, where Supernatural stumbled a bit.

And You Thought We Were Out of the Whole Vampire TV Shows Era…and more news…

True Blood, Moonlight, The Strain, The Vampire Diaries, and The Originals may have gone to the wayside, that does not mean that you Vampire lovers out there should lose hope, The Last American Vampire will be adapted for TV by NBC.

The show is based on a book by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. In the book, we meet Henry Sturges during Reconstruction-era America. Henry is a vampire that is  searching for renewed purpose in the wake of his friend Abraham Lincoln’s shocking death. Henry’s will be an expansive journey that first sends him to England for an unexpected encounter with Jack the Ripper, then to New York City for the birth of a new American century, the dawn of the electric era of Tesla and Edison, and the blazing disaster of the 1937 Hindenburg crash. Deadline

CBS has picked up DC’s the Secret Six. The Secret Six is the name of three different fictional comic book teams in the DC Comics Universe. Each team has had six members, led by a mysterious figure named Mockingbird, whom the characters assume to be one of the other five members. Some members have included Bane, Harley Quinn, Lex Luthor, the Mad Hatter, and the Penguin. Variety

The Witcher has cast some key roles. Freya Allan will portray Ciri, Princess of Cintra. Anya Chalotra will play Yennefer. Deadline

So, the numbers came back from the premiere episode of The Walking Dead and it was not good. It lost almost half of its audience, but AMC swears that this show will be the cornerstone of their channel. That cannot happen when the cornerstones of the show itself are being killed off. Fans were emotionally invested in the characters they met in season 1 and you can only put fans through so much. When I was at NYCC, a kid told me that the reason he and his Father stopped watching the show was that it was the same thing all the time. The Dad piped up and said there was no light at the end of the tunnel for any of the characters. So, why keep watching?

Now, dropping the bomb that Andrew Lincoln was leaving prior to the season airing was in itself a huge mistake. Hope keeps fans engaged. Knowing that Rick will be reaching the end of his road…to sit through that and know that is coming. Why would I put myself through that.

What You Missed from Day 2 of #SDCC

A bit of a review of the day’s news highlights from San Diego Comic-Con.

As expected, a lot has happened and some of it is a little bittersweet. We learned earlier that Andrew Lincoln was leaving the show. He wanted to spend more time with his family and with a show like this the whole work/life balance must take a hit.

The show will return October 7, which is the last day of NYCC.

Casting-wise, We learned of the introduction of Alpha and she will be portrayed by Samantha Morton. Greg Nicotero stated that means Beta may not be that far behind.

One last thing, Andrew Lincoln mentioned that this show has always been an ensemble and that fans should continue with the show…even once he is gone. However, as a fan, what shows fail to understand is that we fall in love with characters and want to follow them on their journey. So, once you start pecking away the characters we met in Season 1 and 2…it is really hard to stay invested.

Now, Star Trek: Discovery

Captain Pike is taking over the Discovery, say que?

Spock needs help? Dios mio.

And Tig Notaro!

To keep fans interested in the Star Trek-verse, since we will not see Discovery until early 2019, CBS All Access will get four new 10-15 minute episodes that will air in Fall of 2018.

Cloak and Dagger has been renewed for a second season. The show will be back in Spring 2019 with 10 episodes.

Here’s the trailer to the much anticipated Glass:

There are some details about the Venom movie panel, courtesy of THR.

Items of note:

  1. Riot will be in the movie.
  2. Venom is part of a world that Sony is creating around Spider-Man world. Jared Leto is in Morbius and there will be a Silver & Black movie.
  3. Also, do not count out a possible Venom and Spider-Man movie.

The movie will come out October 5th.

I believe the biggest news of the day really revolved around the James Gunn and his firing from Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. He made light of pedophilia and rape a decade ago and what everyone fails to understand is that everything comes back to bite you in the ass. So, you have to be mindful of what you put on social media…at all times.

The good thing is that James Gunn accepted Disney’s decision. He could have gone all Markle and making a bigger mess out of the situation.
