2018 & All the TV that it Holds…

It has been a while since I posted.

There were a lot of family oriented things happening in my life that had to take precedent.

But, it is a new year and we must trudge ahead.

I did watch a bit of TV during my time away. I know that I bitched and moaned about Star Trek: Discovery, but after the first two pilot episodes and Jason Isaacs as the Captain on the new ship and with all of his dark and twisted motives…I fell for the show. Go figure.

It is one of the shows I am looking forward to seeing in 2018.

Others are:

  1. The Magicians. The darker, the better…and with the loss of magic, all the more better.
  2. Legion. FX’s trippy take on a Marvel character made TV fun. Now, with our love birds separated, it will be interesting to see if they find their way to one another again.
  3. Westworld. When we last saw our favorites, they just killed off Ford at a gala. You know you want to know what happens next.
  4. The Alienist. I love period dramas. I love NYC. I love the hunt for a serial killer. This is the show for me.
  5. Kingdom. Korean dramas and zombie movies are a guilty pleasure of mine. This tale is a zombie thriller in the Joseon period. You had me at hello.
  6. Good Omens. Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s beloved novel…nuff said.
  7. A Discovery of Witches. The first book was great, the last two kind if let me down…but the beauty and curse of adapting a novel is that they can punch it up and move the pace along at a fun pace. Let’s hope this happens.
  8. Altered Carbon. Honestly, I believe tales like these may end up true. This is about a futuristic series where the human mind can be digitized and downloaded into a “cortical stack” and placed into new bodies called sleeves.
  9. Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. It’s an anthology series that adapts the short stories by Dick. If you love the Twilight Zone and Black Mirror, how can you say no?
  10. X-Files. Which premiered tonight. Que doozy…I will get to that in a bit.
  11. Jessica Jones. You may like Wonder Woman, but I love Jessica. She is an everyday woman who is battling her own inner demons as she tries to keep NYC safe and those that come to her for help.
  12. Krypton. I am not a big fan of the DC movies. But, for some reason TV adaptations of anything comic-related generally do well (barring Iron Fist and Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.), so I want to see how the prequel plays itself out and ties itself into the DCCU.

Then there are the return of our old standby’s that may need to kick it up a notch as all these shows and other newcomers are fighting for viewers.

Let me go back to the X-Files. There was a moment where I felt like I was watching the love child of Mr. Robot and Black Mirror come to life. We come to learn that what we went through at the very end of the last episode we saw, was just a vision that Scully was having. The visions are debilitating and forcing her and Mulder to race to find their son, William. But, like always, there is more at play. Everyone wants William. And even though we had a reveal at the end…I can’t really believe that last statement. There is more to it.  That is the fun of these types of shows. The truth is out there…and we just need to follow Mulder and Scully to it.

To tell you the truth, I love the moments where Mulder and Scully are together.

There has been a lot of talk of Gillian Anderson leaving the show. In my honest opinion, this concept will not function if you remove either Scully or Mulder. They are what make you want to keep watching. Period.

The other tragic bit of news we got over the break was that Dirk Gently was cancelled by BBC America. I am shaking my head. That channel is so limited in its programming. They should just chuck it and add BritBox as a premium channel. Hopefully, fans will rally around thus fun a quirky show and it gets a new home on Netflix or some other channel.

That last season was amazing. What were you thinking BBC America?

I also caught up with the Runways on Hulu and I have to admit that this little show has a lot of twists and turns as it also follows the typical High School narratives of love and love lost, disillusionment of the family you thought you knew and all the other fun stuff kids go through during adolescence. The fun part is that these kids have solidified and even given themselves a team name. Yet, with family that no one can trust…they have no one to turn to but to one another. The big question is…will they survive or will they somehow find a way to topple Jonah and save their families, their city…even the world.

On a bright side, the Golden Globes are around the corner. The 7th to be exact. And the nominees are impressive and it is hard to pick who I think will win. If you want to see the nominees, go here.

The other bright news is that fan fave, Robbie Amell, will be back on the small screen. Deadline, stated that the actor will be in a show titled Upload. In it, people are allowed to put their consciousness “into their preferred choice of afterlife” (or “upload” them). His character meets the love of his life, Nora, in heaven. But, we will follow the two as they live in this dream state.

I will be back with the movies that I cannot wait to see…

News You May Have Missed…

If you are a politically savvy adult, it was an interesting week.

But, let’s focus on some intriguing and interesting news that may shape what you will be looking forward to in entertainment in the foreseeable future.

Marvel fans, prepare yourself for the continued onslaught of movies in the Marvel Movie Universe. Vanity Fair recently interviewed the man with the plan, Kevin Feige, and we learned the following:

“Both Iger and Feige hinted at how the franchise (whose studio has rights to 7,000 characters) will expand into different realms, with James Gunn working in close collaboration to possibly spin off some characters from the extraterrestrial world of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel is “22 movies in, and we’ve got another 20 movies on the docket that are completely different from anything that’s come before—intentionally,” Feige said.”

Who will be next? What will the stories entail? Does Disney’s re-engaging in talks with 21st Century Fox change these plans…like add more to the docket? Or does the docket include some of the properties owned by 21st Century Fox? We shall see.

The Anime that introduced me to Anime, Cowboy Bebop, will be adapted into a live action show by Tomorrow Studios.  Honestly, I understand why you would want to adapt it, but you will not get the feel of the show with an American adaptation. Casting should be interesting. But, I think the corgi from Dirk Gently should be perfect as Ein! For more about this adaptation, go to Deadline.

It took a year, but Disney’s live action version of Mulan has found it’s Mulan! Chinese actress Liu Yifei will portray the brave warrior. THR.

Margot Robbie is working on a standalone Harley Quinn movie that has nothing to do with any of the other slated movies that revolve around Harley. THR.

Kevin Williamson’s psychological thriller Tell Me a Story to series, has found a home on CBS All Access. The show is based on a Spanish series by Marcos Osorio Vital. It takes place in present-day New York City. It will turn classic fairy tales into dark tales of love, loss, greed, revenge and murder. TVGuide.

Stranger Things was renewed for a third season! Netflix.

Netflix has also picked up the untitled Sabrina the Teenage Witch series that revolves around Archie Comics’ The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is a horror/supernatural series. I picked up volume one at New York Comic Con and I loved it and I am now very intrigued at what this adaptation will look like.

Casting News:

Popular Disney actress Dove Cameron has joined ABC’s Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Titans has it’s Robin. Warner Bros. released the first image of Brenton Thwaites as the Boy Wonder. The show follows Dick Grayson as he tries to corral and lead a young group of Superheroes. The live action series will debut in 2018 on the WB.To view the image, click on EW.

Saïd Taghmaoui, from Wonder Woman, has left FX’s Legion before the upcoming second season, but FX stated that the character was recast. He was supposed to portray the Shadow King. Variety.

Good Omens

Have a great week!

News You May Have Missed…

So many little news bites today.

  1. I know that many of you love Jason Momoa, so here is something to keep top of mind in 2018 and 2019. Production will begin on the remake of The Crow.  In The Crow Reborn, Eric, a poetic guitarist, is brought back to life by a crow a year after he and his fiancé are murdered. the script was written by Nick Cave and will be directed by Corin Hardy. Jason Momoa will play Eric Draven. Watch the original if you are intrigued. Great movie. Production will begin in February 2018 and the movie will hopefully be out in 2019. (Movieweb)
  2. If you are a fan of General Hospital, The Originals and Once Upon a Time, you are in luck. Nathan Parson will be playing a charismatic attorney who will be the love interest to someone. Our guess it will be Robin, as they just mentioned that they character has been cast. Nathan played Ethan on General Hospital and he played Jackson on The Originals. NathanParsons
  3. The Orville has been renewed for a second season.
  4. In Good Omens, A tale of the bungling of Armageddon features an angel, a demon, an 11-year-old Antichrist and a doom-saying witch, the character of Williams Shakespeare has been cast. GoodOmensWS
  5. In “I am surprised that this did not happen earlier” news, The Blair Witch Project is being adapted for a tv series. This is all in the infancy stage as the project still does not have a home. Would you watch it? (TV Web)
  6. Mark Strong may end up portraying Doctor Sivana, the archenemy of Shazam! Also, Grace Fulton has been cast as a friend of Batson in the same movie that is slated to be released in 2019. (THR)
  7. Finally, in odd character development. John Diggle of the CW’s Arrow, no longer trusts his team. Which is evident in all of his poor decision making in this current season. Once his wing was clipped, he started to spiral. We can all see that things will not turn out well and it will take a miracle, aka Oliver Queen, to sort out John and whatever mess he gets them in. Do you like this year’s John-centric storyline? (Variety)
  8. Finally, We caught wind (via everyone in Twitter) that the final season of the Originals will focus on the Mikaelsons and some people will return, but no crossovers…barring Klaroline. This makes sense as we are all sure that the team want to send this show off with a lot of HEAs and all the fans happy. (EW)
