Recap – Riverdale: Fortune and Men’s Eyes

Dilton Doyle is dead and Betty and Juggie are on the hunt for his killer. Their first stop is meeting the town’s new coroner. They learn that the unassuming troop leader died from cyanide with three Runic symbols carved into his body. He drank the poison in an apparent ritualistic ceremony by the structure that may or may not be the Gargoyle King. What was interesting is that the new coroner, Dr. Curdle, says it is a true sign of evil. When they go to see the other person at the crime scene, Benjamin Button, they see an item hanging off of the door knob of Button’s hospital room door. It was left by a young lady who likes to wear bows, Ethel. She created the talisman to protect Ben, whom she is dating or she thinks she is dating.

This is the same Benjamin Button who was in a relationship with Miss Geraldine Grundy, who was murdered by the Black Hood aka Betty’s father. The other bit of information they learned was that another troop member had gone missing. However, if you were paying attention, Cheryl mentioned that one of the students was losing her mind because she thought that a winged creature was chasing her.

When Jug and Betty go to Dilton’s bunker to further investigate, they actually come across the bloody and moving structure that is thought of as the Gargoyle King. It chases them, but they wait for the morning to go to the Bunker and they find the items for a game called Gryphons and Gargoyles. They come to realize that the suicide was part of a challenge for the game, but they also come across the missing and hissing student.

When Jughead and Betty confront Ethel about the bunker, Ethel has a seizure. Then the unthinkable happens when Jughead and Betty go to check on Ben, they see him awake and sitting in his window…he then happily commits suicide so he can reach ascension.

So, something strange IS afoot.

Tie that into the weirdness that is the Evernevers and something is definitely off in Riverdale. Especially after the first meeting between Betty and Evelyn Evernever, who wants to hold the info about Betty’s seizure over Betty’s head to ensure some level of control over her.

What is intriguing is that the parents have all gone through this same exact scenario when they were young. So, what exactly is going on?

Archie has been processed into the Leopold and Loeb Detention Center, named after the two wealthy students who in May 1924 kidnapped and murdered 14-year-old Robert Franks in Chicago, Il. They committed the murder as a demonstration of their perceived intellectual superiority which they believed absolved them of responsibility for their actions. Why did the writers choose those names to name the detention center after? Life in the hoosegow is not easy for Archie, the Ghoulies stole his Adidas, the Serpents have turned their back on him, and he is about to lose his presidency at Riverdale High, well he does not know that last bit.

How is he going to lose it? Cheryl has petitioned to take it over in order to help her with her college applications. Unfortunately, Veronica is not having it. She made a promise to Archie and she is going to make it happen. She even goes to her Mother to see if she can cut through the red tape of bureaucracy, so she can start a chapter of The Innocence Project in Riverdale. The Innocence Project is a non-profit legal organization that is committed to exonerating wrongly convicted people through the use of DNA testing and to reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.

We learn that the prison warden is in Hiram’s pocket and he is determined to keep Veronica and Archie apart even if that means keeping Archie in jail for an eternity or maybe even Archie’s death in prison.

I wonder what would make him stop punishing these two?

The scary thing for Archie is that he has been tapped to be the Warden’s new Mad Dog. The last Mad Dog was allowed to have items in his room that no other inmate had. He was also untouchable. Yet, he gave Archie advice about being an animal in order to survive his time in the detention center. The only reason he was given this designation was because Mad Dog “died” in the “riot.” Which was actually just a football game between the inmates.

Nothing is ever as it seems in Riverdale.

There is a side story of Kevin doing whatever he can to keep his relationship with Moose going. He even joins the RROTC, which Moose’s straight-laced Dad runs. That and Cheryl wanting to become president in order to help her college applications are the only normal high school related stories this season.

….Wut? (ALERT: This is not fan art)

I am looking forward to this crossover event.

Casting news:

Maxim Roy has booked a role in October Faction, which follows globetrotting monster hunters Fred and Deloris Allen, who, after the death of Fred’s father, return to their hometown in upstate New York with their teenage children Geoff and Viv. As the family adjusts, Fred and Deloris must hide their identities as members of a secret organization, and our heroes quickly discover that their new small-town setting isn’t as idyllic as it seems.

Roy plays Alice Harlow, a powerful warlock and the last of her kind. Driven by a profound sense of loss, Alice sets out to destroy those responsible for the genocide against her people, but along the way she uncovers a long-held secret that could shatter the Allen family forever.

EPIX’s Pennyworth is in a full casting swing as it has the following:

JACK BANNON SET TO STAR IN TITLE ROLE OF “PENNYWORTH” FOR EPIX AND WARNER HORIZON SCRIPTED TELEVISION, BASED ON THE CHARACTERS FROM DC

Drama from Executive Producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon to Begin Production Monday, October 22, 2018, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK

· Jack Bannon (The Imitation Game, Ripper Street) has been cast in the lead role of Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming EPIX drama series PENNYWORTH, from Warner Horizon Scripted Television and based on the characters from DC.

· The 10-episode, one-hour drama series is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger. It follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier in his 20s, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne, who’s not yet Bruce’s father, in 1960s London.

· Alfred Pennyworth is a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty; you’d never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.

The show has also cast the following:

  • Thomas Wayne – Ben Aldridge
  • Dave Boy – Ryan Fletcher
  • Bazza – Hainsley Lloyd Bennett

Fletcher and Bennett will portray Dave Boy and Bazza, respectively; both are lifelong friends of Alfred’s from their army days serving in the same corps. Dave Boy, a haggard Highland Scotsman who is slowly drinking himself to death since leaving the army, is a close ally of Alfred and Bazza and also the most unpredictable of the trio. Bazza, a posh Bajan playboy, is highly proficient at logistics and a valued member of Alfred’s team.

Now on to the mysterious demise of Dramafever. Asian Drama fans are beside themselves as the streaming service was quickly shut down by Warner Brothers. They cited the competition they were facing from streaming services like Viki, Hulu, and Netflix. While it was a sudden and quick shutdown. Fans of the series should seek out refunds for their premium accounts. Also, if they look hard enough, you can catch up with your favorite shows.

What this means for Asian dramas in the United States and beyond…channels like TVN will need to find a new outlet to showcase their dramas so they reach the masses that want this type of fare.

Reviews:

In Doctor Who’s second episode, The Ghost Monument, we find our our fearsome foursome have been split apart and picked up by two ships that are in the midst of a dakar-style race. While one of the competitors is looking for fortune and glory, the other is trying to protect her family. The goal was for someone to reach the Ghost Monument successfully after going through a gauntlet of obstacles. However, with the Doctor and her friends there, it causes a bit of a wrench for the alien that maintains the race.

We see the Doctor and her friends learn more about one another as they excel at problem-solving and going out of their comfort range. However, while 13 is supportive, she is also protective of her new friends. She even scolded Ryan as he attempted to be a hero in a Halo-like moment and told him the importance of zig-zagging.

We also learned in the episode that the Stenza are a force to be a reckoned with and possibly the main bad guy for 13 during this season. How unfortunate that is…the teeth on the face..yeesh.

IMG_1074-thumb-700xauto-202690

The highlight of the episode was when 13 saw her Tardis. It had me in tears. These first moments for all of the Timelords are so iconic. She sees that the Tardis has gussied herself up, with a change to both her exterior and interior. My favorite moment was when she got a biscuit. Now, they are all safe and sound on the Tardis and 13 is aiming to get them home.

However, in the next episode…The Doctor and her friends meet a seamstress by the name of Rosa Parks.

It’s unfortunate that the numbers are low for Arrow as it is showing some stellar moments for the three main characters of the show, Oliver, Felicity, and William.

This family is in crisis as they are dealing with the repercussion of Oliver’s decision to go to jail. Felicity and William are in an A.R.G.U.S.’ witness protection program with new identities and living lives that they do not want to live, as Oliver tries to keep his head down in prison. This is nearly impossible as all the criminals he has jailed are in there and are aiming to kill him. This new life falls apart when Diaz tracks down Felicity and William. In a heartbreaking moment, we see one of the thugs in jail tell Oliver that his wife is dead…but she is not dead. She fights back and just as all hope is lost, A.R.G.U.S. show up. When Felicity and Oliver see one another…that is love. Now, both of them have decided to stop hiding and fight back, while William is set off to boarding school.

Now, I know that I have not been a fan of the flashbacks…yet, this season we get something different. We get a flashforward of a young man going to Lian Yu and that young man is William and he is on the hunt for a much older…Roy?!?!? This was clever, I have to give them this.

Now, is Roy the new vigilante that is stalking the streets of this city? Only time will tell.

I really do hope that there are some moments of happiness for these characters. There can only be so much these characters and these fans can deal with.

In Blocked, the second episode of The Flash, we are dealing with five plot points:

  1. While Nora informs everyone about why she is really there. Iris is okay and understands why Nora wants to be so close to Barry, but she wants to have a relationship with her daughter. So, watching Nora (a new intern) and Barry work on the crime scene of the escaped convict who used her power to crush someone into a meat cube, it is heartbreaking. However, Barry is going a little nutty with his daughter always around him. Leave it to Papa Joe to make both Iris and Barry understand that they need to give Nora this time and that she will come around and relax eventually.  Eventually, Nora proved herself.
  2. Cisco recovering from heartbreak – When you are forced to follow the 12 step heartbreak recovery of Ralph Dibney, it is never good. But, it is great for laughs. Eventually, he gets that he and gypsy are no more.
  3. Cecilia losing her power and can no longer connect with her daughter causes her to do the unthinkable and that is to use one of Harry’s devices to regain that connection, but Joe’s parenting skills show her the way.
  4. Finding out who the big bad is while fighting a meta who steals high-tech weapons and that villain is named Cicada, whom we meet in the first scene of the episode. He kills the meta, but he also manages to drain The Flash, Ralph, and Cisco of their powers. The great thing was that Nora was able to save her father before any real harm could come to him. After seeing footage, they now have connected Cicada to two events that revolved around Team Flash. Nora knows who it is and Cicada knows Nora.
  5. Caitlin does not want to investigate her Dad’s certificate of death because it means that he did not bother to be a part of her life, if he was alive. Cisco tells her that there is still time to make amends.

Overall, a great episode that is trying to balance the heavy plot points, with the heartfelt and with levity. Go Team West-Allen!

Remember, this weekend is all about Daredevil!

We May Not Have Sherlock, But We’ll Have Dracula…

41K-hTzzOdL._SY346_Netflix has landed a collaboration with the BBC  to air the next project from the dynamic duo of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat (Doctor Who and Sherlock)…Dracula. Variety

Dracula was written by Bram Stoker during the Gothic Horror heyday of the Victorian era. Set in 1897, the series will revolve around the blood-drinking count from Transylvania who sets his sights on Victorian London. In the style of the two creators, there will be three episodes, which will be 90 minutes each.

Interesting factoid, Dracula had a sequel. Dracula’s Guest, which was published posthumously in 1914.

Netflix listened and one show has been axed…and more.

Iron Fist was cancelled. It suffered from the get-go due to poor casting, lackluster scripts, and even though the second season was better, the show did not have enough fan fervor to get it a third season. However, the series ended with a good enough ending that should leave fans satisfied with the main characters off on their own respective adventures.

IMG_1220.jpg

This is a first for Netflix, as the Marvel-based shows have been a cornerstone for the success of the streaming service. While we are waiting for the third season of Daredevil to start and have been promised a third season for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, and a second season for The Punisher…we shall wait to see if we will get another crossover event like The Defenders.

Will you miss Danny Rand and Colleen Wing? Do you think we will see these characters again?

The CW’s Arrow has added to their cast of regulars, with Kirk Adevedo being promoted to series regular for Season 7. Kirk Acevedo, recurred last season as the drug kingpin and crime lord also known as Dragon. Arrow will premiere October 15th. Deadline

I got to watch the premiere of Supernatural and it was nice to see a lot of old faces…like Bobby and the human Lucifer. However, while it was interesting to see the dynamic of Sam leading this group to maintain some order in this world, as he is looking for Dean…it was Dean that was the best part of the show. Well…not Dead, per se, more like the visage of Dean as the Archangel Michael inhabits the vessel of Dean. He’s asking these questions about what people want.

What is he getting at by asking these questions? Other than that, it is just the same ole thing. The show needs to change it up a bit to gain momentum and keep the fans engaged. Especially since they do not have Dean to swoon over. This is reflected in the numbers, where Supernatural stumbled a bit.

Star Trek: Discovery’s First Short Trek, “Runaway” Recap

tilly.jpgAfter talking to her Mom, Tilly suffers a bit of a setback in the self confidence department, but that changes when she encounters an unexpected visitor who is in of some help and guidance….just like Tilly.

The beauty of Tilly is highlighted in this short (only 15 minutes long). She is the everyday woman that is striving to reach her goal. in Tilly’s case it is to become a Starfleet Commander. However, when Tilly’s Mom can’t show confidence in her daughter, Tilly starts to second guess her decision. That all changes when a stowaway named Po pops up.

This is when Tilly shines. She’s empathic, compassionate, and very human as she tries to suss out exactly what is happening with Po. Ultimately, she helps Po figure out what she should do next by allowing her to just talk it out…not dictate what she needs to do.

This is what a true leader does.

This show was a great way to get to know the character of Tilly better. She is still quirky, funny, and sweet, but this gave her a little bit more insight into the beloved character.

Now, there is a very interesting backstory to Po and she should watch the short in order to get a full picture of what is going on.

I can’t wait for the next one.

And You Thought We Were Out of the Whole Vampire TV Shows Era…and more news…

True Blood, Moonlight, The Strain, The Vampire Diaries, and The Originals may have gone to the wayside, that does not mean that you Vampire lovers out there should lose hope, The Last American Vampire will be adapted for TV by NBC.

The show is based on a book by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. In the book, we meet Henry Sturges during Reconstruction-era America. Henry is a vampire that is  searching for renewed purpose in the wake of his friend Abraham Lincoln’s shocking death. Henry’s will be an expansive journey that first sends him to England for an unexpected encounter with Jack the Ripper, then to New York City for the birth of a new American century, the dawn of the electric era of Tesla and Edison, and the blazing disaster of the 1937 Hindenburg crash. Deadline

CBS has picked up DC’s the Secret Six. The Secret Six is the name of three different fictional comic book teams in the DC Comics Universe. Each team has had six members, led by a mysterious figure named Mockingbird, whom the characters assume to be one of the other five members. Some members have included Bane, Harley Quinn, Lex Luthor, the Mad Hatter, and the Penguin. Variety

The Witcher has cast some key roles. Freya Allan will portray Ciri, Princess of Cintra. Anya Chalotra will play Yennefer. Deadline

So, the numbers came back from the premiere episode of The Walking Dead and it was not good. It lost almost half of its audience, but AMC swears that this show will be the cornerstone of their channel. That cannot happen when the cornerstones of the show itself are being killed off. Fans were emotionally invested in the characters they met in season 1 and you can only put fans through so much. When I was at NYCC, a kid told me that the reason he and his Father stopped watching the show was that it was the same thing all the time. The Dad piped up and said there was no light at the end of the tunnel for any of the characters. So, why keep watching?

Now, dropping the bomb that Andrew Lincoln was leaving prior to the season airing was in itself a huge mistake. Hope keeps fans engaged. Knowing that Rick will be reaching the end of his road…to sit through that and know that is coming. Why would I put myself through that.

Recap: Riverdale – Labor Day

Riverdale

What is most surprising about this episode is that these kids were just becoming Juniors in High School. Was the courtroom somewhere in the deep south in the 1950s?  Because there is no A/C anywhere. Also, who would allow Archie’s own mother to be his defense attorney?

Welcome to Riverdale… and it is the weekend before Archie finds out if he will be convicted of murder. This little reprieve allows Archie to have one last perfect summer weekend with his love and his two best friends, but not before we get an update about what is going on in each household.

Veronica and Hiram are still butting heads, this time over the fate of Archie. She is even willing to go after jurors to throw her father under the bus in order to save Archie. However, Hermione confessed that she is no puppet to Hiram, just a prisoner. She will never leave Veronica alone in this world.

Alice is drinking the Kool-Aid that the Farm is doling out and she is driving Betty nuts with her attempts to bring her into the fold. However, we find out that Betty has been illegally forging a prescription for adderall and lying about seeing a therapist.

Fred is at a loss over Archie possibly being convicted. He and Mary blame themselves over everything that has happened.  Yet, no matter what anyone says…Archie feels all alone in this because he feels guilty for leaving Cassidy with Andre. So, he spends the weekend prepping everyone for their new roles while he is away. Betty is to look after Fred, Reg is to look after the football team, etc…

Jughead is the King of the Serpents and thanks to Hotdog and Cheryl wanting to be Katniss Everdeen, a new war is brewing. The crown is heavy on his head, but he is committed to keeping his friends, family, and those that rely on him safe. Even if he is no longer a southsider.

The deliberations are heavy on everyone’s minds as the weekend comes to a close, but when the jury comes back in a deadlock of six to six, Archie agrees to take a plea deal that he believes would save everyone from another long and arduous trial. What he leaves behind are loved ones that are shocked and heartbroken over his decision.

But, the sexy Dads of Riverdale are working together to get back at Hiram and to get Archie out of jail. Veronica learns from Hiram that this whole thing is punishment for her turning her back on blood. This is when Veronica draws the line in the sand and declares that she is no longer his daughter. We then see Archie leaving the town with Pep as he heads to the hoosegow.

Now, this is when it gets really weird. Dilton Doyle is acting all kinds of weird, weirder than usual. Why? The Gargoyle King. He leaves behind this map for Jug and when Jug follows the map, he finds Dilton and Ben kneeling in front of a something that looks like a horned creature made out of bones. Ben and Dilton have ingested something that has them out and Jug is at a loss as he tries to help them. Think Slenderman meets D&D.

The weirdness level goes up a notch when Betty wakes up in the middle of the night and hears a noise in the yard and that is when she finds Alice and Polly in a ceremony where they hold the twins over a fire and let them go…the twins float in the air and this…well this is too much for Betty’s brain to handle, so she drops and convulses.

It is what happens in the last moments that grabbed me. While, the soap opera-like story arcs are entertaining…how much can these kids go through when they are just turning 16 and starting the whole process of preparing for SATs and thinking about what colleges they want to go to and what it will take to get into those colleges. Is there a Riverdale College?

The other cool thing about the episode is the nods to the comics, like Hot Dog, we saw the jalopy, and we heard the name of Edgar Evernever and with him…we will see Evelyn.
