The 2017-2018 TV season is coming to a close and that means all the networks, cable channels, streaming services are putting their wares out to show what’s to come…
This means that we have also learned what shows are returning and what shows are not returning.
I think the most shocking return was Agents of SHIELD, which will be back for a truncated 6th season. This was an interesting announcement because everyone was saying the 5th season would be the last and also because Infinity War changed everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this show is tethered to the movies.
Outside of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s cancellation, was the cancellation of the fan-favorite Lucifer. Fans started #SaveLucifer campaign on Twitter and as Tom Ellis, aka Lucifer himself, stated, “Power to the People.” The show is in talks to move to another home.
Honestly, if Constantine can show up on the CW and find a home on DC’s Legend’s of Tomorrow after being canceled on NBC’s Constantine…than it looks good for everyone’s favorite fallen angel.
The return of Midnight, Texas, but it is to air Friday nights at 9 pm on NBC.
The 100 and iZombie were renewed over at the CW and they picked up five pilots among them:
- Charmed – After the tragic death of their mother, three sisters in a college town are stunned to discover they are witches. Soon this powerful threesome must stand together to fight the everyday and supernatural battles that all modern witches must face: from vanquishing powerful demons to toppling the patriarchy.
- Roswell, New Mexico – After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.
- In the Dark – A flawed and irreverent blind woman is the only “witness” to the murder of her drug-dealing friend. After the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at the guide dog school owned by her overprotective parents.
- Legacies – Continuing the tradition of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” the story of the next generation of supernatural beings at The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Klaus Mikaelson’s daughter, 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson; Alaric Saltzman’s twins, Lizzie and Josie Saltzman; and other young adults come of age in the most unconventional way possible, nurtured to be their best selves…in spite of their worst impulses. Will these young witches, vampires, and werewolves become the heroes they want to be — or the villains they were born to be?
The CW renewed all of their DC assets, as well as Riverdale, Supernatural, Jane the Virgin and Dynasty. That is a lot of TV.
Besides the cancelation of Lucifer, FOX made a lot of other interesting changes for their fall schedule. The Gifted made it to the Fall line-up, but The Orville and Gotham are mid-season replacements. Also, the 5th season of Gotham will be its last. But, it will be the season where we see Bruce become the Dark Knight.
Outlander was picked up for two additional seasons, hurrah for me! But, they canceled Ash vs. the Evil Dead. I will miss their set-ups at Comic-Con.
Westworld was renewed for a 3rd season.
Amazon renewed The Tick and Jack Ryan, mind you…the latter has not even aired one episode of season 1.
Netflix renewed Lost in Space, Travelers and Jessica Jones.
Hulu renewed The Runaways.
EPIX grabbed the 10 episode prequel to Batman that centers on Alfred Pennyworth. It is being created by the dynamic duo behind Gotham. It is a standalone story exploring Alfred’s life as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne.
As news rolls in, I will update.
