August 17, 2018 – To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before started off as the first book in a very popular YA book series by Jenny Han. Now it’s on Netflix and it would be a mistake for you to not curl up on your sofa and watch this delightful teen romantic comedy.
Take part Can’t Buy Me Love, Part Drive Me Crazy, and a sprinkle of a John Hughes homage and you have this movie that revolves around Lara Jean. A quiet Junior that likes being invisible, until her life gets turned upside down when her secret love letters somehow get mailed out to each of her five crushes. Toss in navigating life after a loss that left an indelible mark, having her older sister go off to college and well, life as she knew it, is over.
She cooks up a plan to keep her neighbor (one of her five crushes) at arm’s length, life is now much more complicated and interesting.
Ultimately, love happens when you least expect it and Lara Jean Covey just needs to allow it to happen. That’s actually the fun part of the movie, watching Lara Jean overcome a lot in order to open herself up.
I loved this little movie that has a great cast. I can’t believe John Corbett (Aidan Shaw from Sex and the City) is playing a Dad. I feel so old.
I hope Netflix the other two novels (P.S. I still love you and Always and forever Lara Jean) in the book series. We need more movies like these.
August 11, 2018 – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was really a great old school romantic British drama. Lily James and Michiel Huisman are great together. I hope Netflix continues to add these types of movies to its growing roster of new films.
August 9, 2018 – Kevin Kwan’s best seller, Crazy Rich Asians, was turned into a fun, romantic, familial dramedy, that was filled with a lot of insight into what classist Asian families and Asian Society expects and demands of their offspring.
Following your hearts desire is not top of mind. Take over your parent’s businesses, be religious, be on Vogue, and marry for family’s sake is the key to surviving. Actually, many of the theatre goers in tonight’s showing were in full blown tears during some key scenes. So, it did strike a chord with many.
Back to the movie. It was the women that stole the movie.
From Rachel Chu’s resiliency, to Astrid’s fragility and resolve, to Eleanor’s protectiveness of her family, and to Peik Lin being the BFF we all need in our lives. They all showed us the expectations, sacrifices, challenges, and pitfalls of being in a well-to-do family.
Like any movie that revolves a girl and a boy who come up against adversity after adversity, you just end up cheering them on to the very end.
Should you watch it? Yes! A great story and great acting make this a must see! I will even buy it when it comes out for digital download!
August 5, 2018 – We watched The Spy Who Dumped Me today and I have to say that it is right up there with Spy (w/Melissa McCarthy) in the fun factor for spy movies, it is also impressive action-wise, and funny! The plot is pretty straightforward. We have a woman that has not strived for anything and as a result is living a pretty lackluster life. That all changes when her ex pops back in her life and thrusts her and her BFF into a spy mission that revolves around some intel. Like MI: Fallout, there is a lot of action. However, the pair of Kunis and McKinnon keep you in hysterics as they navigate the treacherous world of espionage. Even my Husband liked it…that says a lot. I hope there is a sequel. Also, for fans of Outlander, Sam Heughan is impressive as he plays the straight man to Kunis and McKinnon. He should toss his hat into the Bond ring, because he has the eye brow thing going, looks good in a tux, and can do action with the best of them. You will not regret going to see this popcorn flick!
July 27, 2018 – We went to see the latest installment in the Mission Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Fallout and we saw it in 4Dx.
Before I go one about how fun the experience was, let’s talk about the movie. Now, the plot, picks up after the last movie and Ethan is still dealing with the fears that Solomon Lane has imbedded in his psyche and with the latest impossible mission he accepted and it deals with missing plutonium. You get his trusty crew of Benjamin and Luther, plus Walker (Henry Cavill) and we get Ilsa back! A lot is at stake for everyone involved, but as always..Ethan has to keep his worlds about him as he tries to save the world and those that he loves.
Great turns from all your faves and new people, plus amazing action sequences that had me saying, “Aye Dios Mio” quite a few times.
Here is a testament to how good this movie is, my Husband said to me, “You can keep James Bond…I will always want to see an Ethan Hunt movie.” The last movie he went nuts for was The Darkest Hour.
Any who, let me talk about why you should only watch movies with high insurance values via 4Dx. It was like being strapped into a rollercoaster as you watched the non-stop action of Mission Impossible: Fallout!
At one point, as we felt ourselves move forward and hurtle down wherever we were hurtling down…the women sitting next to us were screaming. Legit screaming. It was amazing!
Due to the amount of action, we kind of broke out in laughter in a moment of respite. That is just how much action there was.
Now, with that said…only do this if you are guaranteed a lot of action. The cost is a little nutty and really there is no point to use this, if you were going to see a plot driven movie.
July 20, 2018 – I started off my vacation with a return to Kalokairi in Greece via the mirroring tales of Young Donna and her adult daughter, Sophie, as they both deal with the trials and tribulations of love and impending motherhood.
I think this movie, Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again, is far better than the first. Watching Donna as a college grad go on this adventure to find her place in this big world and then meeting these three men who have not only made an impact on her life, but also on her daughter’s was both funny and sweet.
Yes, I cried. Any Mom or daughter would cry in one particular scene.
So, I suggest that you and the ladies that you love go see this movie. You get Cher and Andy Garcia in this one and they are great additions to this stellar cast!
Also, Lily James…she can sing, dance, and act. We may be seeing our next Meryl in action.
July 11, 2018 – So this is the only Disney movie franchise that does not make me break down in tears!
July 7, 2017 – One of the best things about the MCU is that they try different genres in their movies. I personally think that their funnier movies are their best. They have a lot more humanity in them. Case in point, Ant-Man and The Wasp.
This movie picked up two years after Civil War. Scott has been under house arrest for almost two years. In that time, he balances his life with his family and his ex-con business partners. That is until something triggers his memories. This brings Hope and Hank Pym back into his life.
Out of sheer guilt and love for these two, does Scott risk his freedom. Now, the reason Hank and Hope go to him is that they believe Scott holds the key to getting Momma Pym back.
A lot happens in this action-packed and funny movie. But, what I loved were the sweet moments between Scott and his daughter, Scott and Hope, Luis and his tales, and the first post credit scene.
If you are not into the MCU, find someone that is well versed in it and they will give you a synopsis that will assist you. I do think you need to watch the first Ant-Man movie.
This is a great summer flick for the whole familia! Go see it!
July 7, 2018 – I saw Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom a couple of weeks back, but failed to post due to unforeseen circumstances at work.
I digress, we pick up a few years after the events that transpired in Jurassic World. As we expected, Owen and Claire have parted ways. Owen is in the middle of no where happily living his life and building his dream home, while Claire is fighting for the right to live for the dinosaurs she left behind. Why is she doing this? Well, the island’s volcano is about to blow and when it does….all those dinosaurs will once again be extinct.
From the trailers, we all knew Claire recruited Owen to go back to the island to save them. However, there was a far more devious and sinister plot afoot.
I will not divulge that plot, but there are a bunch of twists in the remainder of the story that made it a really fun movie to watch.
1. Claire wore flats!
2. Chris Pratt is Owen…he is funny, clever, and has that big presence and bragging attitude that reminds me of Han Solo.
3. Maise is the granddaughter 😉 of one of the people that created Jurassic Park and she steals her scenes.
4. Jeff Goldblum.
5. Blue…she is the best Dino a person can have.
If you are into popcorn flicks, this is the movie for you.
Now, the bad…Is this as good as the first movie? Not realy. Also, how the movie ended leaves a lot of questions for me. Where do you go from here franchise? It will be interesting to see what the hell they come up with, if they decide on a third movie.
June 8, 2018 – I will not give anything away for Ocean’s 8. Let me preface that I liked the movie, but I was expecting a lot more from it.
You have such a stellar cast, yet Mindy Kaling’s comedic talent was under utilized and Sandra Bullock was kind of phoning it in, which is kind of surprising. Rihanna was just Rihanna who could look at a screen and use a mouse.
With that said, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson and Awkafina held their own and owned their characters.
Anne Hathaway stole her scenes and it was fun watching her play a starlet, but there is a twist with this character.
There were laughs and one clever twist, but then there was a very predictable twist…which kind of bothered me. It was the reason why the heist took place and I would have preferred it not be driven by that backstory.
There were a lot of cameos, especially from those that frequent the Met Ball and a couple from the Danny Ocean movies. Yet, there was one gaping hole and that is the score. In other heist movies, music helps drive the scenes….this movie does not have that at all.
I know a lot of people will love this movie…but they could have done so much more with this cast.
Should you watch it? Well, go with your girlfriends and make a night out of it. If you do not want to do that and want to save $$$, than wait for it to pop up on Netflix or Amazon.
May 25, 2018 – Solo : A Star Wars Story reminded me of Star Wars in that it is a fun space western. Han’s journey to where we meet him initially, in Star Wars, is rather interesting, but his cavalier and confident attitude is in full effect. He said things and did things that only Han would say and do. But, he also has that heart that made him go back to help Luke in Star Wars.
What was great about the movie is that it is actually a fun and funny movie. Alden is classic Han when he is in scenes with Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, and Chewie. Very quippy and that look over his shoulder. Is he trying to be Harrison Ford. No. He should not even try to be that Han. What he is…is a young Han who has a goal in his mind. Does he reach that goal? Go see the movie.
The biggest cheers were for the moments we only heard of in other movies. We see the moment he meets Chewie (who stole the movie), how he got the Millennium Falcon, when he meets Lando and why he ends up in Tatooine.
I know there were reservations about this movie…due to casting and director issues.
Happily, I can tell you that I was not let down. Maybe it is because I am a fan of the Star Wars movies and I’m a fan of Han. But, I just have to give it to Ron Howard who stepped in and made the movie enjoyable.
May 23, 2018 – Book Club is kind of like a modern sexy and sassyGolden Girls. In it, we see a very popular book series transform four lifelong bff’s lives and give them the happiness they deserve in their almost twilight years.
There were some laugh-out-loud moments in this movie. Candace Bergen is hilarious as a federal judge finally dipping her toe into the online dating pool…after spending x amount of years mourning the end of her marriage. Andy Garcia…made all the ladies in the theatre fall for him as he played a pilot that pursues one of the bffs.
Super fun movie that is perfect for a girl’s night out! Go see it with your squad!
May 18, 2018 – We saw Deadpool 2 and it did not disappoint.
It’s over the top in humor, fight sequences, and even in the love department. As that is what propels our anti-hero in this sequel. A loss plunges him into a deep depression, but then he realizes what allows him to move forward and that is following in Logan’s steps…but he has to do one thing first. You can guess what that is from all the commercials and all of the interviews.
And those two intertwined plots give the movie heart. There was even a moment where I said Awwww.
That does not mean we missed out on his subversive jokes. But this time around, the humor is represented in references to pop culture, to superheroes, and to political correctness. There was this moment where people were shocked and that led to the biggest laugh in the theatre.
Should you see it. If you want to have a good time, yes!
P.S. There were quite a bit of cameos.
P.P.S. – Now, where does this series go next? Well, that is a big question. Why? Watch the extra scene that pops up during the credits. No post credits scene, so go home after that one extra scene. By the way, it was hilarious!
April 26, 2018 -Stunned…I was left stunned at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
Little kids cried.
It changes the MCU totally and you have to watch to the very end of the credits.
With that said, it was a great movie…we laughed, cringed, whooped it up, and ultimately were left stunned. Go watch it!
March 31, 2018 – Ready Player One is a fun 80’s nostalgia-laden quest driven movie that will make a 16 year old forget that she has a mobile and go nuts in her seat and a 45 year old cheer on the heroes as they try to find the keys to the Oasis!
I really liked the movie and I am not sure why some critics, like Sandy Kenyon; said it was too long. Half the fun was seeing all the recognizable characters of our youth as the kids solve the riddles and puzzles: Beetlejuice, Chucky, Gundam, MechaGodzilla, Freddy Krueger and much more were dispersed throughout the movie.
If you love the 80s, if you love David vs. Goliath tales, if you just want to have fun…this is the movie for you.
I tip my hat to Mr. Spielberg. One thing, if you have read the book…They changed quite a bit, but that should not deter you from going to see the movie.
March 25, 2018 – Surprisingly, Pacific Rim Uprising was a fun movie with a clever twist that helped move the movie along and possibly give it a third movie in the franchise.
In all honesty, this movie is what it is and there should be no apologies for being a popcorn flick that allows you to escape the qualms of the world.
John Boyega made for a playful leading man, think of a younger Will Smith and his quips, and Scott Eastwood made for a great foil to Boyega’s character. It is uncanny how much he looks like his Dad.
Now, if you liked the first movie…and your kids love the Power Rangers and and robotic cartoon, than this is a great movie your whole family can see together. Especially, since it emphasized family and teamwork.
March 15, 2018 – If you loved John Hughes movies as you were growing up…Love, Simon is the movie for you. My friend and I cried and laughed as Simon dealt with the topic of coming out and finding the person that he loves.
February 13, 2018 – Like anyone who thinks that once you start something, you must complete the journey…
I went to see 50 Shades Freed with friends, because my husband said “Oh Hell No” to seeing this with me. My friends, on the other hand, I could tell that they liked the movie that closed out the popular franchise. I thought otherwise.
The first movie, was much funnier and cutesy…very fan fiction-y and that made it palatable. Second movie, I saw with a boisterous group of people and they pointed out every preposterous moment and it had me laughing from beginning to the end.
This movie…I was editing it as I watched it. Why are we spending time on Christian’s brother and not getting more insight in the bad guy’s motives. Delete this moment, this should have been earlier… smh. Now, I can appreciate Jamie Dornan and his voice. Who knew he could sing so well? And Dakota Johnson can hold her own. They both did their best with a less than stellar script.
I suggest you wait till it’s on cable or streaming or not watch it all. Do not spend your money.
January 27, 2018 – Our first non-Star Wars movie of 2018 is…
Maze Runner – The Death Cure and I think that the reason I enjoyed this movie so much is that I did not read the YA series. To tell you the truth, I actually liked all of these movies.
This last movie was 10x better than the last Hunger Games movie. I also think Dylan O’Brien and Ki Hong Lee may be the future of Action Movies. It’s not something to aspire to, but something they can easily achieve.
Now to the movie, there were a quite a few deaths in this movie, which seems apropos. One of them had the crowd clapping and it’s not who you think. Also, I have never seen so many explosions in a movie, but if you want a pure adrenaline action flick…it was so-so. Not that it did not have some moments where I was cringing and covering my eyes. The male characters really do propel the movie. They have a natural camaraderie that is evident in all their scenes. The crowd even went nuts when an old face returned to help Tommy in his quest.
The ending had quite a few jump in your chair moments. Ultimately, it was a satisfying ending. One thing…the book is a trilogy, but that last scene made you feel like there was more to Tommy’s tale.
Should you see it? If you have seen the first two movies, finish the series out and you will not regret it!
