Upfronts: Odd Cancellations & Interesting Pick-Ups

The 2017-2018 TV season is coming to a close and that means all the networks, cable channels, streaming services are putting their wares out to show what’s to come…

This means that we have also learned what shows are returning and what shows are not returning.

I think the most shocking return was Agents of SHIELD, which will be back for a truncated 6th season. This was an interesting announcement because everyone was saying the 5th season would be the last and also because Infinity War changed everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this show is tethered to the movies.

Outside of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s cancellation, was the cancellation of the fan-favorite Lucifer. Fans started #SaveLucifer campaign on Twitter and as Tom Ellis, aka Lucifer himself, stated, “Power to the People.” The show is in talks to move to another home.
Honestly, if Constantine can show up on the CW and find a home on DC’s Legend’s of Tomorrow after being canceled on NBC’s Constantine…than it looks good for everyone’s favorite fallen angel.

Other surprises:

The return of Midnight, Texas, but it is to air Friday nights at 9 pm on NBC.

The 100 and iZombie were renewed over at the CW and they picked up five pilots among them:

  • Charmed – After the tragic death of their mother, three sisters in a college town are stunned to discover they are witches.  Soon this powerful threesome must stand together to fight the everyday and supernatural battles that all modern witches must face: from vanquishing powerful demons to toppling the patriarchy.
  • Roswell, New Mexico – After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.
  • In the Dark – A flawed and irreverent blind woman is the only “witness” to the murder of her drug-dealing friend. After the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at the guide dog school owned by her overprotective parents.
  • Legacies – Continuing the tradition of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” the story of the next generation of supernatural beings at The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Klaus Mikaelson’s daughter, 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson; Alaric Saltzman’s twins, Lizzie and Josie Saltzman; and other young adults come of age in the most unconventional way possible, nurtured to be their best selves…in spite of their worst impulses. Will these young witches, vampires, and werewolves become the heroes they want to be — or the villains they were born to be?

The CW renewed all of their DC assets, as well as Riverdale, Supernatural, Jane the Virgin and Dynasty. That is a lot of TV.

Besides the cancelation of Lucifer, FOX made a lot of other interesting changes for their fall schedule. The Gifted made it to the Fall line-up, but The Orville and Gotham are mid-season replacements. Also, the 5th season of Gotham will be its last. But, it will be the season where we see Bruce become the Dark Knight.

Outlander was picked up for two additional seasons, hurrah for me! But, they canceled Ash vs. the Evil Dead. I will miss their set-ups at Comic-Con.

Westworld was renewed for a 3rd season.

Amazon renewed The Tick and Jack Ryan, mind you…the latter has not even aired one episode of season 1.

Netflix renewed Lost in Space, Travelers and Jessica Jones.

Hulu renewed The Runaways.

EPIX grabbed the 10 episode prequel to Batman that centers on Alfred Pennyworth. It is being created by the dynamic duo behind Gotham. It is a standalone story exploring Alfred’s life as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne.

As news rolls in, I will update.

Recap of The Gifted’s Season Finale – eXtraction and X-roads

Synopsis: Dr. Campbell attends an anti-mutant summit, attempting to take the Hound program national. Some of the team members at Mutant HQ go on a dangerous mission to stop him.

On the heels of a renewal, we head into the finale of FOX’s other X-Men based show The Gifted.

The other show is…Legion!

I digress, first let me tackle the Struckers. The family initial main task is to rescue Reed’s Mom before Sentinel services get to her to try to extract whatever info she might know about Otto’s work on inhibiting the x gene. They succeed, but she goes off to Boca Raton to be safe and not a burden on her family. However, she does give them a lead to someone who may know of Otto’s research…Madeleine Risman. Now, even though the kids are at odds about using their power, Lauren is more about saving everyone…while Andy is much more aggressive. They do decide to combine forces and unleash the power when the underground hideout is being attacked by the Sentinel’s SWAT team. They succeed in staving off everyone so that the mutants can escape sans being followed and also destroying the headquarters leaving no trace of their habitation of the area.

My favorite part of this sequence is that Reed went all Braveheart to rally still at the headquarters and Kate showing her leadership skills.

This family is the reason why I watch this show.

The Muties are in cahoots with The Frosts. Their plan consists of getting access to an event where Dr. Campbell is touting his Anti-Mutie agenda and kidnapping him. Everyone is on board, but there is trouble within the group. Lorna is embracing the ideologies of the Frosts and when Johnny, Marcos and Blink get in, but fail at their attempt to kidnap Campbell, due to him taking a group of kids hostage as a way to escape and then heads to an airstrip to get far, far away. Yea…that does not happen. Lorna gives in and tears that plane apart. Leaving Blink, Marcos, and Johnny stunned.

When the dust settled and everyone regrouped at a Way Station, the line had been drawn by Lorna. Team Helfire is in full effect and it encompasses of Lorna, Esme, Sage, Fade, Andy and other people whose name I cannot recall at all.

With a house divided, will the Mutants be able to move forward?

Especially with Jace Turner taking up the fight to take down the Mutants. This all came about after not only suffering the loss of his daughter twice, but also for being blamed for the death of the Senator at the hands of Lorna, the deaths of all the men at the attempted take down of the mutants at their HQ and anything else his boss couple pin on him. This is a clear example of being a horrible boss. If you are like me, than you know Jace will be a force to be reckoned with in Season 2.

For what it’s worth, it was a great episode that tied up some loose ends and opened up a lot of opportunities for story telling.

Did you like the episode?

Are you excited about Season 2?

News You May Have Missed…

TCAs have led to some renewals and some changes:

  • The Gifted (FOX)
  •  The Walking Dead (AMC) – With news that Scott Gimple has moved up to oversee all of the Walking Dead franchise and that means the cornerstone of the franchise will be getting a new show runner, Angela Kang.
  • Stan Against Evil (IFC)
  • The Orville (FOX)
  • Marvel’s Runaways (Hulu)

We also received some disheartening news from the world of HBO. The prequels for the much heralded and beloved Game of Thrones will not see the light of day until possibly 2020. Screen Rant

NBC has decided to shake things up with their latest cop show. David Heyman’s In Between Lives is about a young woman who uses her special gift (talking to the dead) to help a detective and an ex-FBI agent solve crimes. Deadline

We know that Starz’ American Gods has lost Gillian Anderson, but they have also lost their show runners,  Michael Green and Bryan Fuller. At the TCAs, Chris Albrecht stated that they will continue to be involved, but at what capacity…no one is sure. Chalk up all issues to two main factors: 1. Budget and 2. Timing. Fingers-crossed that the second season will be in production sooner than later. Variety

But, Starz did give us some good news. The Continental, which is in the John Wick universe has been picked up by Starz. If you recall from the movies, The Continental is the hotel that John Wick goes to as he seeks refuge or intel and assistance in his revenge plots. So, the show will focus on this safe haven for assassins and give us more details about how this world of assassins works. They did promise that the show will match John Wink in tone and in action. This is a show to keep an eye on. THR

We have our New Sabrina the Teenage Witch and More News Bites…

We have our New Sabrina the Teenage Witch and More TV News Bites.

The latest comic book to TV show adaptation that everyone is excited for is The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which will be on Netflix. During the New York Comic Con’s Archie Comics panel, it was mentioned that the house that Archie Andrews built was on the hunt for an actress to portray the very popular character and they’ve found her! Kiernan Shipka has landed the part and we can’t wait to see her portray Sabrina!

Fox’s The Gifted has been renewed for a 2nd season.

Fans of Dirk Gently! Rejoice! The show is on Netflix…and we must rally to save this show! Quirky, fun and unique, this little gem of a show needs a third season.

The sexual scandals that have plagued Hollywood have reached FX’s Legion. Bryan Singer has been accused of sexual misconduct and as a result of that, he as requested that his name be removed from the show. Deadline

Not only will Gillian Anderson not return to the X-Files, but she is not returning to American Godz. LA Times

Also, a little advice to the American Godz/Outlander fans who are customers of Optimum. If, for some reason, a deal does not come around by the time your favorite shows come back. I suggest that you sign up with a streaming service and watch your shows during the time that is on and end your subscription after the show ended. It makes life easier and you do not have to deal with the insanity of cable.

USS Callister fans, the director of the Black Mirror episode has stated that he and the producer of the episode were talking about a potential spinoff pilot. Screenrant

Happy news….Animaniacs will be rebooted and will air on Hulu. and Flight of the Concords will be back for a special on HBO. EW

The good news ends there. HBO confirmed that Game of Thrones will be back in 2019.

Recap: The Gifted – threat of eXtinction

Well, well, well…we now know a lot more about the Strucker family, don’t we?

We meet the famous Fenris twins in this episode and we learn their connection to the scenarios that have been playing out in the present day. Yes, yes… Dr. Campbell keeps mentioning them. However, we learned last night that Reed and his children are descendants of the Andreas von Strucker, one half of the feared Fenris twins.

Reed and Otto have not been on speaking terms due to Otto holding on to guilt from attempting  and successfully removing the X gene from Reed, with a drug that he created at Trask Industries. That’s right! Reed is/was/maybe a mutant. However, while his Dad was trying to do something that he thought would help his son, all Reed can remember was the pain from the ordeal and his Father’s reluctance to take him to the hospital during his illness. Yet, this information comes out as Reed tells his father of his children.

It is overwhelming for Reed. His kids could be exactly like the Fenris and can cause a lot of damage…if they hold hands.

However, there was no time for a Q &A session because Dr. Campbell pops up and that’s when Otto sacrifices himself so Reed and John can escape.

Otto’s last words to Reed were ominous,  “Protect them, son. Protect the world from them.”

In the fall out, the injured Dr. Campbell got away, but their weapon of choice (Pulse) was destroyed. Both John and Reed were left to mourn and think of the future.

There were developments at the underground hide out, thanks to Caitlin being the only person with medical training, that tips off the mutants about Campbell’s plan to send his mutants undercover via Esme’s mental interpretation a la Professor X.

This show needs to focus on main plot points. They are starting to add more characters that may, in the long run, be important.  However, they may risk losing viewers due to not giving us more in the corner stones of the show. One of those corner stones is the Struckers. I would have appreciated more face time with Papa Otto.

Next: eXtreme measures – Eclipse’s ex-lover returns; Reed and Sage find alarming information about Lauren’s new friend; Thunderbird helps Blink open up about her past; Jace approves a special surveillance program.

News You May Have Missed

A lot of news dropped over the last week that may be of interest to you…

1. Netflix – Are you binging on The Punisher? Frank is such a broken man and as a result, the show is dark. Take your time with it. On a happier note, Netflix has acquired Super-Normal –  a character-driven, subversive take on a genre that Hollywood and the rest of the world loves too much. Daisy Ridley and Luke Evans are co-starring on the project. (THR)

I am guessing that with Netflix losing all of their Disney-related shows and movies in 2019, they are grabbing whatever popular comic-fare there is. That is not intended to come across as desperate. It is interesting to see what their thought process is.

First, Netflix bought the MillarWorld-verse.

Next, we catch wind. via Deadline, that Ellen Page will be the lead in the adapted version of Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy. This title is owned by Dark Horse Comics.

I wonder what is next for Netflix.

2. Pottermore – We got our first glimpses of the next chapter in the Fantastic Beasts franchise:

FNBST2_TT_Debut_3200x1800_DOMImages courtesy of: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Warner Bros. via PottermoreFNBST2_First_Look_3000x1800-R01_SQUARE_2

The cool things about these images:

  1. I have already marked my calendar! But, the kicker is…do you see something familiar in the title? Is there a wand, a circle, and a triangle hidden in plain sight? Yes, we see the Deathly Hallows! How do they play into the story…especially where we have…
  2. …Dumbledore in the movie! Yes, Jude Law is Dumbledore. I have loved him since Gattaca. So, I am thrilled!

3. Ryan Reynolds was up to his fun shenanigans last week.

Yes, Deadpool payed homage to Bob Ross! This made my day when it dropped. But, what was even more funny was the synopsis for the Deadpool 2:

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

Somewhere in there, we will have Cable. So, of course…this is on my must watch list for 2018!

4. The CW/DC Universe’s Black Lightning will premiere on January 16.

5. Comics are fodder for entertainment. It is already set-up with story lines and story-boarding. Basically, all they have to do is find the right actors to portray the much beloved characters and tweak a story to fit a two hour movie. So, it makes sense that FOX is wanting to expand their X-Men universe. What is surprising is that James Franco has his hands all over this expansion. However, it is not like they are tackling a well-known character (for me, that is). No. They are going to work on Multiple Man. For more info, go to Syfy.

6. So, Justice League technically did not do as well as expected. Are you surprised, not me. I did not watch it. While, I root for Wonder Woman. I am not a fan of Zach Snyder’s DC Movie Universe. They are over produced and the stories are not engaging. Mind you, Joss Whedon worked on the script.

7. Another comic book getting the big screen/small screen treatment is Danger Girl. It follows adventurer-turned-reluctant-spy Abbey Chase via Deadline.

8. The Magicians will be back in January and we got our first preview:

9.  X-Files fans – The Show will return on Fox on Wednesday, Jan. 3 .

10. Casting News:

Fear the Walking Dead

Also,  Skyler Samuels is set for a key recurring role in Fox’s Marvel drama series The Gifted. She will play a refugee mutant with telepathic abilities and a mysterious past. (Deadline)

11. Syfy is expanding their comic-based TV fare with it’s new Pilot Deadly Class.

Deadly Class

Imagine Riverdale High was a school for training assassins. The show is based in the 80’s in San Francisco and focuses on a group of kids being trained to be assassins.
