Curb Your Stranger Things Withdrawal …and more news…

I know many of us are not thrilled about waiting a bit longer to see a new season of Stranger Things on Netflix. Back in June, we learned that we were going to get a series of books in the Fall that would help us deal with with the withdrawal. Well, the books are in and they will go one sale on October 30, 2018.

From Book to the Screen: Castle Rock Renewed and Nine Lives to be Made into a Movie

This summer, I have watched a few people watch Castle Rock and they have spent many an hour trying to figure out the story behind Kid and this town. It has been an entertaining experience and now they get a whole new season to stress themselves out over. THR stated that the new season may be a totally new mystery with a new cast.

Nine Lives by Ursula K. Le Guin is being adapted for a movie. The short story was originally published in 1968 in Playboy magazine. The story is about cloning and the concept of the self. Deadline stated that the story will be adapted by Tom Basden and Siri Rodnes.

While book adaptations are fueling both TV and the Silver Screen, six-month bookstore sales are down 1%, please remember to support your local bookstores!

Latest TCAs News: The CW, Showtime, Hulu, and More…

If you are a gamer, the biggest news came from Showtime with the announcement of the Halo series finally happening. The best part is that the Master Chief will be the lead character in the series. What will be interesting to see if this cable network will actually achieve HBO level of success with this series, as in Game of Thrones, True Blood, and Westworld. (Deadline)

The other gaming to TV media news revolves around Netflix’s The Witcher series. Henry Cavill recently stated that he would love to portray Geralt as it is an amazing role. Geralt is a monster hunter who develops supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly beasts. The books have been adapted into a popular video game franchise and movie. (IGN)

In the book to the small screen world, Slaughterhouse-Five is going to be adapted for Epix. Slaughterhouse-Five is a sci-fi anti-war novel, where we follow Billy Pilgrim through his experiences during World War 2. (Variety)

TVL

Now to movies:

Supergirl is coming to the silver screen near you. (Variety)

Other Tidbits:

  1. Even though we know, thanks to the TCAs, that there may never a spin-off of Supernatural, we will see Bobby and Mary’s relationship be explored and we will see how it will impact Dean and Sam.
  2. Iddo Goldberg joins Jennifer Connelly in Snowpiercer, which will air on Neflix.
  3. Black Lightning will not crossover into the Arrowverse…and it is a no-go for Batman to appear…
  4. ….but, we now know that Ruby Rose will be playing Batwoman. She Kate Kane will be the first Lesbian Superhero on TV.
  5. Not only will Bughead be solid, but Archie and Veronica will prove to be resilient as they face the verdict of this trial in the first episode of the upcoming season of the CW’s Riverdale. We may also see Josie and Kevin become siblings.
  6. Fans of Netflix’s Lucifer, the show will return in 2019 and the season may be split into two seasons.
  7. Casting for The Man in the High Castle is ramping up casting. Cle Bennet and Rich Ting are set as recurring characters and Frances Turner has joined the Amazon show.

Being the Villain is Not Always a Bad Thing…

In every movie, we have a protagonist and an antagonist. Typically, the antagonist is viewed as the opposition to the hero of the story. The antagonist spurs on some type of philosophical growth in the hero which will propel them to do the right thing. We usually look up to the hero and down at those that go against them. However, as of late, people are rallying around those that we used to frown upon…the villain. However, he or she is no longer viewed as a villain, but as an anti-hero a.k.a. someone who lacks conventional heroic attributes or morals.

Case in point, Bruce Wayne’s arch-nemesis…the Joker.

In Comics, shows, and movies, the Joker is viewed as a psychopath with a warped sense of humor. Thanks to Heath Ledger and Jared Leto’s respective portrayals of the maniacal killer, fans have been wanting and waiting for a movie that focused solely on the popular character.

Over the last few months, news has been picking up that we were not only getting one movie, but two.

Not only did we finally get confirmation that Joaquin Phoenix will be portraying the Joker, but we also heard that Robert DeNiro is in talks to play a talk show host that drives the character to go mad and turn into the “Clown Prince of Crime.” We also learned that Frances Conroy is in talks to play Joker’s Mom. This gritty film is partly written by and directed by Todd Phillips. This movie is not part of the current Worlds of DC, it is a different origin story.

However, the second movie that will revolve around Jared Leto‘s Joker, will continue to  be a part of the Worlds of DC franchise.

Another franchise universe that everyone is looking forward to is being kicked off with Venom, which stars Tom Hardy. In it, we watch Eddie Brock acquire the powers of a symbiote. The other movies slated for the Venom franchise are:

  1. Silver and Black – Silver Sable, a mercenary, is one of those rare characters who can be viewed as both a villain and as an ally to someone like Spider-Man. Black Cat is Felicia Hardy, daughter of cat burglar Walter Hardy. During college, she trained herself be a fighter and acrobatic. These two work together and are at odds times.
  2. Morbius – Will be portrayed by Jared Leto, Morbius, aka Michael Morbius, is imbued with vampiric superhuman abilities and physical traits stemming from a failed biochemical experiment that was supposed cure his rare blood disorder.
  3. Nightwatch – Nightwatch is Doctor Kevin Trench, who witnessed a costumed man die battling some terrorists armed with an invisibility-generating ‘cloaking” device, and unmasked the corpse to learn that it was an older version of himself.
  4. Silk – Cindy Moon is Silk and she was also bitten by the radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker.

Will Venom cross paths with Peter Parker? Well, during SDCC, the Venom director believes that the studio is thinking that it is something that can happen. Also, both Tom Hardy and Tom Holland would love to see these characters face off. So, cross your fingers and pray to St. Jude for this to happen.

What will really be interesting to see is if SONY and the Worlds of DC will be as regimented about scheduling these movies in a timely way like the MCU has effectively done. Remember it is all economic, you have to meet the demand by supplying the product that your audience wants and that can be tricky.

Day 3 of #SDCC is Here!

There were some more bits and bobs last night that may be of interest to you:

Let me tell you…Joss Whedon knows how to make a lady happy. We found out yesterday that there is a plan to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 20th Centure Fox has hired Monica Breen to be the showrunner of the reboot. Whedon is also attached as the Executive Producer and co-writer of the script.

Whedon has his hands full as his other project, The Nevers, will end up on HBO. He will not only be the showrunner, but he will also write, direct, and be the executive producer. The Nevers is an epic science-fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world.

We also saw the latest trailer for the next season if Preacher:

Yep! We get to meet the Allfather. I am not totally looking forward to it, but this dark and funny show is not for the faint of heart…is it.

Also, apparently Subway did not want to be associated with the show. Especially…with a Hitler working in their doppelganger store.

Now….Fantastic Beasts -The Crimes of Grindlewald:

I always loved the darker Harry Potter movies, so excited about this one and we get to meet Nicholas Flamel of the Philosopher’s Stone fame!

The official trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters:

The offical trailer for Shazam:

I am a sucker for funny superhero movies. Will this movie and Aquaman save the DC movie franchise, which is now called World of DC.

Here’s the much anticipated Aquaman trailer!!!!

Guess what?! Lobo is joining Krypton! Lobo is a Czarnian that is a mercenary/bounty hunter character in the DC comic universe. From what I recall, he was really popular during the 90’s due to him being an anti-hero and his popularity continues. It should be entertaining to see how much mayhem he brings to Krypton.

What You Missed from Day 2 of #SDCC

A bit of a review of the day’s news highlights from San Diego Comic-Con.

As expected, a lot has happened and some of it is a little bittersweet. We learned earlier that Andrew Lincoln was leaving the show. He wanted to spend more time with his family and with a show like this the whole work/life balance must take a hit.

The show will return October 7, which is the last day of NYCC.

Casting-wise, We learned of the introduction of Alpha and she will be portrayed by Samantha Morton. Greg Nicotero stated that means Beta may not be that far behind.

One last thing, Andrew Lincoln mentioned that this show has always been an ensemble and that fans should continue with the show…even once he is gone. However, as a fan, what shows fail to understand is that we fall in love with characters and want to follow them on their journey. So, once you start pecking away the characters we met in Season 1 and 2…it is really hard to stay invested.

Now, Star Trek: Discovery

Captain Pike is taking over the Discovery, say que?

Spock needs help? Dios mio.

And Tig Notaro!

Also…

STRR.jpg

To keep fans interested in the Star Trek-verse, since we will not see Discovery until early 2019, CBS All Access will get four new 10-15 minute episodes that will air in Fall of 2018.

Cloak and Dagger has been renewed for a second season. The show will be back in Spring 2019 with 10 episodes.

Here’s the trailer to the much anticipated Glass:

There are some details about the Venom movie panel, courtesy of THR.

Items of note:

  1. Riot will be in the movie.
  2. Venom is part of a world that Sony is creating around Spider-Man world. Jared Leto is in Morbius and there will be a Silver & Black movie.
  3. Also, do not count out a possible Venom and Spider-Man movie.

The movie will come out October 5th.

I believe the biggest news of the day really revolved around the James Gunn and his firing from Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. He made light of pedophilia and rape a decade ago and what everyone fails to understand is that everything comes back to bite you in the ass. So, you have to be mindful of what you put on social media…at all times.

The good thing is that James Gunn accepted Disney’s decision. He could have gone all Markle and making a bigger mess out of the situation.
