Game of Thrones Prequel Starts Casting and More…

We are starting off with casting. As we slowly wind down 2018, we are finally hearing about casting for the much anticipated prequel to Game of Thrones. The news spread like wildfire and now we are wondering how Naomi Watts‘ character, a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret, plays into the history of Westeros. What we do know of the story is that it predates, by thousands of years, the story that we all know and love. The new tale chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. Intriguing.

Jaime Murray has been cast as Theresa Walker for Gotham‘s last season. She has a dark secret and she will be Jim’s nemesis. TVLine

Pennyworth continues to add to their evildoers. Jason Flemming will be playing a villain called Lord Harwood. Deadline

Movie News:

As we patiently wait to see Overlord on November 9, the director of the movie (Julius Avery) has been tapped to write and direct Flash Gordon. Did you see the 1980 movie? It is a cult classic that is based on the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by and originally drawn by Alex Raymond. It was created to compete with the Buck Rogers adventure strip. Variety

A few hints of whats to come in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, Director Cathy Yan spoke at a conference and stated the following:

  • The script has a lot of dark humor and as expected, there is a theme of female empowerment running throughout it.
  •  Cassandra Cain, a ward of Barbara Gordon who inherits the Batgirl costume in the comics. Deadline

Upcoming TV Shows:

We’ve known that Disney was planning their own streaming service and that they were going to have shows that revolved around some key Marvel heroes. We now know that one of the shows Marvel is currently developing is a limited series centered on the Winter Soldier and Falcon. TVGuide

Have a Happy Halloween Everyone!

What You Missed…

I’m unhappy that Gotham is ending, but I do hope it ends with a bang!

The Orville also got a premiered date and that will be Sunday, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

As you know I spent a good chunk of my Sunday watching the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix. It was great and possibly even better than its cousin, Riverdale. At the end of my recap, I had a couple of questions for you about what was to come for our fair Sabrina.

E! interviewed Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and he had the following  tidbits about the second season:

  1. In season 1, Sabrina split her time between Baxter High and the Academy of Unseen Arts. In season 2, she will be going to the Academy full-time, how that affects her mortal relationships and the time spend in the mortal world will be the big question.
  2. Jaz Sinclair and Lachlan Watson both promise that, “Now that the mortals are involved in the witch world, s–t’s gonna get weird(er).” Sinclair is also happy that we get to see these two world are weaving together.
  3. Sabrina signed that book “…to find her own power to defeat the Dark Lord,” Shipka stated. Aguirre-Sacasa added, “But the tension of Sabrina having signed her name in the book or what that means is absolutely the dramatic question and the motor in season two.”
  4. Dating will be a new adventure for Sabrina in Season 2.
  5. As we saw in season 1, with Nick and Prudence’s orgy scene, with Sabrina fully entrenched in the magic world, the show will get much more sexier.
  6. At the end of Season 1, we saw Sabrina with the Weird Sisters, but do not think it will be all rainbows and unicorns for these four.
  7. As we saw at the end of Season 1, Lilith will have to contend with the Dark Lord’s new pet, Sabrina, in order to secure her claim as Queen of Hell.
  8. The sisters will have to go their separate ways as Zelda deals with raising a baby that she stole and Hilda embraces the idea of being in love.
  9. Ambrose will have to deal with his past indiscretions in the upcoming season.
  10. Season will go deeper in to the murder mystery of that teen warlock, whose parents committed suicide.

As we get closer to the upcoming season of Outlander, we learned that the white sow will indeed make it to the show. TVLine

At New York Comic-Con, there were so many people dressed in these blue and white jumpsuits. It had to be from an Anime, so I decided to ask a teen what show he was dressed as. It turned out to be My Hero Academia. The popular anime series will be turned into a live action movie. Syfy

Casting News:

Manifest – Francesca Faridany has been cast as Dr. Fiona Clarke. A prominent professor and lecturer who specializes in the study of collective human consciousness. TVLine

Harley Quinn Animated Series – Alan Tudyk will voice the Joker. Syfy

Kip Pardue may still have a job as one of the parents on Marvel’s The Runaways, but this may be for a short time as the actor has been accused of accused of sexual misconduct by actress Sarah Scott. LA Times

Recap-wise, I will be watching Castlevania over the weekend as I try to catch up with the other usual suspects in the TV shows that I recap.

What You May Have Missed…

It seemed like the weekend was filled with news from the silver screen.

We learned that the following movies are coming to a movie theatre near you in 2019:

  • The third Kingsman movie will be released November 9, 2019 and Matthew Vaughan will be back to pen the script and to direct.
  • The Joker movie that stars Joaquin Phoenix will be released October 4, 2019.

While we are talking about The Joker, the director of the movie posted the following and it is kind of unnerving:

Camera test (w/ sound). Joker.

A post shared by Todd Phillips (@toddphillips1) on

The director also posted our first look at Zazie Beetz in the movie.

DC is in the midst of testing actresses for the upcoming Birds of Prey movie. THR stated that Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smolett-Bell, and Justina Machada are just a few of many that are testing for the movie that will star Margot Robbie as fan favorite, Harley Quinn.

The main group of the Birds of Prey consists of Barbara Gorden/Oracle, Dinah Lance/Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, and more.  These female superheroes go on special missions around the world.

Marvel has tapped Chloe Zhao to direct The Eternals movie. The is just the latest example of Marvel looking at the indie circuit to find some highly talented Directors that give its movies a less formulaic look and feel. Variety The Eternals are a race of humanity that are described as an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created sentient life on Earth.

Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective, The Alienist, Maniac) will take on the task of helming the next James Bond movie, which will mark the last movie starring Daniel Craig as 007 and the 25th James Bond movie.

Fantastic Fest is still going on in Texas and over the weekend people were raving about two upcoming horror movies:

  • Overlord – The story of two American soldiers behind enemy lines on D Day. But, that synopsis makes it sound like you will be watching a sequel to Dunkirk. That is not the case. Remember, in J.J. we trust. Moviegoers called it a ferociously gory war/monster movie and they loved it.  It will be released November 9.
  • Suspiria – A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up. This is not Black Swan. It is actually a remake of a movie that came out in the 70s, which to me is the height of classic horror movies. Some viewers left the movie speechless, in a good way. Others stated that it was spellbinding and the scariest movie they had ever seen. It will be released November 2.

Finally, a director listened to the audience at a showing of a movie at a festival and takes action. Deadline noted that after the response from viewers at TIFF, David Mackenzie trimmed 20 minutes from The Outlaw King, which starts Chris Pine. I, personally,  do not think that this is a bad thing, People’s attention spans are short and sometimes the vision of a dedicated director can’t hold a movie goer. So, sometimes, snipping away until you find a movie that is under two hours and makes the viewer want to stand up and cheer is a must.

The movie is a true David v Goliath story of how the great 14th Century Scottish ‘Outlaw King’ Robert The Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat and repel the much larger and better equipped occupying English army. It will air on Netflix on November 9.

That’s it for me.

Have a great day!

Horror/Suspense Shows Keep Making Their Way to the Small Screen and at the Movies…

With the success of American Horror Story and other shows of the same ilk, it made sense that networks, cablers, and steaming services would offer more and more shows that feed the desire of viewers to engage in shows that focus on the occult.

Back in the 80s, John Carpenter had a movie called Prince of Darkness and it was a box office failure. However, over time the movie has become more popular and with that cult status John Carpenter may adapt the movie in to a TV show for Shudder.

“We’re talking to them about doing a theme. And maybe doing a show for them. What would you think about Prince of Darkness as a TV show?”  Consequence of Sound

We shall see if this project come to fruition, but Shudder does have a slew of new programming for all those that love shows that make the average viewer anxious. Upcoming projects for Shudder:

  1. Riprore from Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) – The focuses on the heart of gangland Los Angeles, where a gruesome discovery sparks a frenetic homicide investigation, but underneath the surface lurks a darkness that leads to the end of days. Syfy
  2. Creepshow from Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead) EW

While we are on the topic of the dark prince, Lucifer has given us a look at the show’s Eve.

eve.png

Eve will be portrayed by Inbar Lavi. Remember, Lucifer was picked up by Netflix for its upcoming 4th season.

We also got a trailer from Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House:

Not for the faint of heart…

Regarding suspense/horror movies, casting for the upcoming Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining, continues with the movie finding its Dr. John and it is Bruce Greenwood. Deadline

So, I watched the Nun and well…it was not my favorite of the Conjuring movies. But, there was a bright spot to the movie and that was not Frenchie. It was actually Taissa Farmiga, who played Irene. She held her own in the movie and we just learned that she will be in an upcoming suspense flick. EW

The movie, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, is by Shirley Jackson. The book is a gothic tale of a peculiar girl named Merricat and her family’s dark secret.

The movie’s synopsis is as follows:

Merricat, Constance and their Uncle Julian live in isolation after experiencing a family tragedy six years earlier. When cousin Charles arrives to steal the family fortune, he also threatens a dark secret they’ve been hiding.

The movie also stars Alexandra Daddario, Sebastian Stan, and Crispin Glover. It will be released on the 22nd of September.

What You Missed…

There were a couple of interesting bits of casting news, a first look, and I have a question.

First, we got to see that awkward moment when you meet your replacement:

Titans stars Brenton Thwaites, Teagan Croft, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Alan Ritchson, Minka Kelly, Bruno Bichir, Lindsey Gort, and Seamus Dever and starts October 12th. IGN

Did you see the cute promo for the CW’s new Sunday night programming that features the ladies of Charmed and Supergirl?

The CW ‘s Arrowverse annual crossover event has it’s Lois Lane. If you were a fan of Grimm, than you will be excited to know that Elizabeth Tulloch has been cast as the sassy reporter that captures Clark Kent’s heart. The crossover will span over three consecutive nights and Tyler Hoechlin (Clark Kent/Superman) is slated to be in all three episodes. Deadline

One superhero show that is not part of the Arrowverse has a new cast member. Black Lightning has cast Sofia Vassilieva as the Looker.  THR Here is a little intel on the character. The Looker is Emily Briggs, who was a mousy bank teller who lived a quiet life with her husband. Until she was kidnapped by people from the underground civilization known as Abyssia. A group of heroes named The Outsiders rescue her and during the battle in Abyssia, we learn of Emily’s heritage and eventually she has a meta-human moment and turns into a beauty with powers.

Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul has joined HBO’s Westworld, no details of who the character is and what his role is in the upcoming third season. EW

The cast for the upcoming NOS4A2 is rounding itself out with the casting of Zachary Quinto and Ashleigh Cummings. This show, based on a book series of the same name by Joe Hill, will air on AMC. Variety

We got our first look of Joaquin Phoenix’ The Joker, thanks to filmmaker Todd Phillips.

FirstlookTheJoker

There has been a lot of talk of Jon Hamm becoming Batman. That would be interesting to see. What do you think about that?

Have you watched The First on Hulu? This little show that features Sean Penn who leads an ensemble cast in this near-future drama about a crew of astronauts attempting to become the first humans on Mars. Under the direction of visionary aerospace magnate Laz Ingram (Natascha McElhone), the crew contends with peril and personal sacrifice as they undertake the greatest pioneering feat in human history.

I watched all of the episodes and it was a little hard in the beginning, but once you get over the hump of the first two episodes…you will fall in love with the characters of the show. Especially, Anna Jacoby-Heron, who plays Denise Hagerty. She is Tom’s (Sean Penn) daughter and she is still in conflict over the loss of her mother and her father’s desire to return to space. We see her whole life. We see the moment that breaks her. We see the moment where she makes the hardest decision for her father’s sake and then there is a scene towards the end, in a staircase, and it brought me to tears.

I suggest you give this little show a shot.

One last thing. Today is the day! The Emmy Awards will air tonight and if you are a fan of the small screen, you have already started praying for the shows that you love.

The categories that are piquing my interest are:

Best Drama Series…this is a tough one to call and then they tossed in The Handmaid’s TaleThis is Us and The Crown. So, maybe next year for Game of Thrones.

Best Limited Series…oh TV gods, please let The Alienist win!

If you do not have a ballot to follow along, Vanity Fair has a printable ballot. Print it out and make your predictions. I hope your shows win.

Cavill Hanging Up His Red Cape and More…

It looks like Henry Cavill has officially moved on from the DC extended universe.

Due to scheduling conflicts that did not allow the British actor to make a cameo in Shazam, a new commitment to The Witcher series, and DC focusing on a much younger version of Clark Kent in The Supergirl movie, THR

It just seems like the time is right for the actor move on. It is also the perfect opportunity for DC to tweak their formula for the movies. I still believe there is something about the Arrowverse and other DC TV shows that allows them to grab the attention of and sustain its fans. The movies just have to figure what that magic ingredient is…writing!

Cavill

He definitely has a flair for the dramatic.

Will you miss Henry Cavill as Superman?

I will miss him in glasses.

Continuing with Casting News, Katherine Langford of 13 Reasons Why and Love, Simon will star in Netflix’ Cursed. If you do not know about the project, here is some info from a March press release:

Cursed is based on an upcoming book of the same name, Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue (portrayed by Katherine Langford), a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther. There are 10 episodes slated.

Netflix has shifted from its touting of young love to all things that go bump in the night thanks to the new show, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Sabrina This is not the Sabrina you grew up with and if you want to get a little background on this character before the premiere, check out the comic series at your local comic book shop.

One of the best things about British TV is that it likes to dip a toe into classic sci-fi and it ends up churning out some of the best shows on TV. So, when we heard that HBO was going to co-produce and distribute His Dark Materials, I was ecstatic.  His Dark Materials is an epic trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman which consist of Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. The series revolves around two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry. We follow their adventures as they wander through a series of parallel universes.

The cast includes Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Deadline

There is another Book to Small Screen to make note of and it is because Netflix is continuing to ride the tails of the recent successes of their teen-centric films:

NETFLIX ACQUIRES DUMPLIN’

The Film Features New Collaborations and Original Music from Dolly Parton

Netflix has acquired the film “Dumplin’,” which features collaborations and original music from entertainment industry icon Dolly Parton.

Film Release Date: The film will be released later this year on Netflix in the U.S. and select international territories, and in select theaters in the U.S.

With that said, Deadline stated that the co-owners of The Ripped Bodice Bookstore have signed with Sony Pictures TV to develop TV projects based on their close relationship with romance novel authors and readers.

I do think that the  acquisitions of movies based on YA, chick lit, and a slew of other literary genres is incredibly smart. They acquire the rights to books that have a fandom in place and the numbers to prove that they are certifiable hits. It gives us, as moviegoers, a nice break from all the sequels, superhero, horror, and action heavy movies at the theaters.

Besides the whole debacle with Henry Cavill ties with DC, it seems like another comic book based property is also having a scandalous moment. American Gods, Starz, has lost its second show runner. To be fair, the cast and whomever is left is making it their business to keep everything going in hopes of getting the show on the small screen in 2019. Digital Spy

Before I go off on a laughing camel, I forgot to post the latest trailer for Daredevil’s third season.

Ok. That’s it for me.

Have a great day!

~M!

P.S. – Wait! My favorite news! Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies) will be in a Hong Kong drama! Variety

If you have not watched an Asian Drama, you do not know what you are missing.
