What You Missed…

Quite a bit of news dropped yesterday and the majority has to deal with casting.

First, everyone is talking about the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer that was released in Brasil.

  1. Happy is flirting with Aunt May and she is not balking and she is ok with him being Spidey. But, Peter needs a break from being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
  2. Far from home equates to Peter and his schoolmates go on a trip to Europe, but he has left his spidey suit behind in the States.
  3. In Venice, he gets closer to MJ.
  4. Nick Fury pops up with new spidey suits to recruit Peter.
  5. Peter and Mysterio (Mysterio is the name of several fictional characters, supervillains appearing in Marvel Comics) work together to combat the Elementals and Hydroman.

Keep in mind that this could all be a ploy by Mysterio to become a supehero as that is what his modus operandi is in the comics.

Now, fans were confused because of Infintiy War, but…remember that the following timeline exists for the upcoming Marvel movies through Summer 2019.

  • Captain Marvel –  8 March 2019
  • Avengers: Endgame –  26 April 2019 – Remember, this movie ties up all the storylines of the first 10 years of Marvel movies. Did you notice that Doctor Strange actually said ‘Endgame’ in Infinity War?
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home –  5 July 2019

Because Far From Home comes after Endgame, it stands to reason that Peter survives and this may be the reason why Peter wants to take a break from being Spider-Man.

While we are talking about Spider-Man, speculation is running high that with the announcement of Venom 2 getting a new screenwriter via Games Radar…Spidey may be involved. Discussing Film (via IGN) interviewed Jeff Pinker and this is what he had to say:

“Without revealing anything I’m not allowed to reveal,” Pinker teases, “It is not impossible that in a future, upcoming Venom movie, Spider-Man will play a significant role.”

While we are talking about Marvel properties, Marvel confirmed that a Doctor Strange sequel is officially happening. Variety

In regards to the Marvel properties that air on Netflix, Variety states that there is a clause in the agreement between Marvel and Netflix that prohibits the characters in these shows from appearing in anything other than Netflix “for at least two years after cancellation.” This clause also includes films.

Casting News:

Steven Yeun has joined Jordan Peele’s Twilight Zone. The title of the episode he will star in is “The Traveler.” Yahoo

DC announced that Joel McHale will be playing Starman in the DC streaming service’s Stargirl.

Joel McHale plays rich socialite Sylvester Pemberton, aka Starman. A courageous and confident Super Hero, Starman is a member of the Justice Society of America—DC’s original Super Hero team, which first appeared in ALL STAR COMICS #3 in 1940. Starman wields a mysterious anti-gravity weapon called the Cosmic Staff. His longtime partner is his sidekick, Stripesy, better known as Courtney Whitmore’s stepfather, Pat Dugan.

Ali Wong has joined the cast of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). She will play an ancillary character in the Gotham Police Force that is close to Renee Montoya. The Wrap

Chris Messina has also joined the cast of the Birds of Prey movie. He will play Victor Zsasz, who is a sadistic serial killer who carves a tally mark onto himself for each of his victims and is working with the Black Mask aka Ewan McGregor. Deadline

Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be back on Supernatural as Papa Winchester in the 300th episode of the longest running show on The CW. People

Miley Cyrus is returning to acting. She mentioned in an interview with Howard Stern that she will be in an episode of Black Mirror. In regards to the character:

“There’s a lot of dimension to it, and actually it was while the devastation of Malibu was happening, and it was a really weird learning experience for me because I was so far from home and the show is already really dark, and it’s already kind of eerie when you’re there the whole time.”

In Development:

After the Elseworlds finished, finding out that a Batwoman pilot was in the works was no surprise. Here is the synopsis for the pilot.

In a Gotham suffering in Batman’s absence, Batwoman is a dark DC Comics drama following the journey of Kate Kane as she dons a cape, cowl, and detective’s hat to save her city. But Kate’s personal life proves just as complicated as she grapples with a fractured family, a rookie team, and unattainable love. SpoilerTV

By the by, Syfy has an interesting article about the possibility of the Green Arrow being killed off at the end of the 2019 Crisis crossover. I think that it would be a smart move, but we also saw that in Elseworld’s crossover, that there is a chance that Oliver Queen dies and Diggle takes over. We shall see, but this speculative talk is fun to read.

Take That DC…Disney Offers Superhero Programming for Streaming Service

Disney has anted up as it adds a slew of superhero programming to streaming service.

Variety reported that the programming would be limited runs for popular characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe who have not been lucky enough to have their own standalone movies. The characters they mentioned were Loki and Scarlet Witch.

If the phase plans for the movies are any indication of how aggressive Disney/Marvel will be with their streaming service, than fans of the Marvel-verse will be set with old, new and original programming for years to come.

Are you team Marvel or Team DC?

Superhero Scoop: Season 2 Trailer of Iron Fist and What’s Up with Pennyworth?

Yep! There is the outfit we all know and love from the comics!

The trailer is much darker in tone, which is interesting because Danny has typically embraced a much lighter in tone persona. This is a guy who looks like he regrets getting the Iron Fist. But, since he has it, his ultimate goal is to try to just keep the mean streets of New York City peaceful. His main obstacles in this second season are:

  1. Davos, who is hell-bent on getting the Iron Fist power back. Especially after seeing what happened to Kunlun.
  2. The Meachums. We saw Joy in the trailer and it will be interesting to see her plot line play out. We also know that Ward will be in the second season.

Luckily for Colleen and Danny, they have Misty to aid them in their plight.

We learned a few months ago that Bruce Wayne’s Father Figure/Butler will be getting his own show on EPIX. Pennyworth will get a 10 episode order and we just learned that they will begin filming the much-anticipated show in the fall. The show will tell the story of the beloved DC character during the 1960s, when he is a former special-forces officer living in London and working for Thomas Wayne.

No casting news…yet.

Being the Villain is Not Always a Bad Thing…

In every movie, we have a protagonist and an antagonist. Typically, the antagonist is viewed as the opposition to the hero of the story. The antagonist spurs on some type of philosophical growth in the hero which will propel them to do the right thing. We usually look up to the hero and down at those that go against them. However, as of late, people are rallying around those that we used to frown upon…the villain. However, he or she is no longer viewed as a villain, but as an anti-hero a.k.a. someone who lacks conventional heroic attributes or morals.

Case in point, Bruce Wayne’s arch-nemesis…the Joker.

In Comics, shows, and movies, the Joker is viewed as a psychopath with a warped sense of humor. Thanks to Heath Ledger and Jared Leto’s respective portrayals of the maniacal killer, fans have been wanting and waiting for a movie that focused solely on the popular character.

Over the last few months, news has been picking up that we were not only getting one movie, but two.

Not only did we finally get confirmation that Joaquin Phoenix will be portraying the Joker, but we also heard that Robert DeNiro is in talks to play a talk show host that drives the character to go mad and turn into the “Clown Prince of Crime.” We also learned that Frances Conroy is in talks to play Joker’s Mom. This gritty film is partly written by and directed by Todd Phillips. This movie is not part of the current Worlds of DC, it is a different origin story.

However, the second movie that will revolve around Jared Leto‘s Joker, will continue to  be a part of the Worlds of DC franchise.

Another franchise universe that everyone is looking forward to is being kicked off with Venom, which stars Tom Hardy. In it, we watch Eddie Brock acquire the powers of a symbiote. The other movies slated for the Venom franchise are:

  1. Silver and Black – Silver Sable, a mercenary, is one of those rare characters who can be viewed as both a villain and as an ally to someone like Spider-Man. Black Cat is Felicia Hardy, daughter of cat burglar Walter Hardy. During college, she trained herself be a fighter and acrobatic. These two work together and are at odds times.
  2. Morbius – Will be portrayed by Jared Leto, Morbius, aka Michael Morbius, is imbued with vampiric superhuman abilities and physical traits stemming from a failed biochemical experiment that was supposed cure his rare blood disorder.
  3. Nightwatch – Nightwatch is Doctor Kevin Trench, who witnessed a costumed man die battling some terrorists armed with an invisibility-generating ‘cloaking” device, and unmasked the corpse to learn that it was an older version of himself.
  4. Silk – Cindy Moon is Silk and she was also bitten by the radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker.

Will Venom cross paths with Peter Parker? Well, during SDCC, the Venom director believes that the studio is thinking that it is something that can happen. Also, both Tom Hardy and Tom Holland would love to see these characters face off. So, cross your fingers and pray to St. Jude for this to happen.

What will really be interesting to see is if SONY and the Worlds of DC will be as regimented about scheduling these movies in a timely way like the MCU has effectively done. Remember it is all economic, you have to meet the demand by supplying the product that your audience wants and that can be tricky.
