Recap: Doctor Who – The Witchfinders

Aiming for a coronation, but ending up in 17th Century Lancashire during the Witch Trials that King James was so fond of, Team Tardis get sucked into the mystery of why the landowner is so hell bent on offing all those that live on her land.

They pose as Witchfinders to get to the bottom of the case in order to save a local girl who is being accused of being a witch, just as her Gran was. Graham is considered the “head” Witchfinder because he is a male and well, that annoyed me as much as it annoyed the Doctor.

Graham actually attended a Witch Trial tour and he informed that the town they were in, Bilehurst Cragg, was not listed as a stop. So, that bit of info tips off the Doctor. However, it is Yaz that forces the Doctor to get her Sonic out to find out what is really going on and that is…the ground is made of some alien matter that is making the dead come back to life and it is somehow possessing the land owner.

Upon further investigation, they, along with King James and the local girl whose Gran was a Healer and killed by the local land owner…due to her inability to help the land owner…which spurred this whole thing on, learn that the land owner broke a lock that kept this race of aliens imprisoned. Now, these “undead” are going after her.

Eventually, we learn that the land owner is possessed by the wife of an alien king and she wants to break her hubby out of jail so they can rule Earth.

Of course the Doctor fixes the locking mechanism for the prison and they entrap the prisoners that were loose and King James kills the former land owner with a torch, which pisses of the Doctor.

In recompense, King James agrees to wipe the name of the town off the face of the earth and to also redeem his hateful ways. He also asks Ryan to be his protector back at the palace…which was amazing.

While fans may hate these trips back in time, they are actually a lot of fun. It is also great for children to see that we should be grateful for the time that we are living in. While we may still have issues, we as a race have me great strides. We must remember to learn from our past in order to not make the same mistakes again.

Next: It Takes You Away – On the edge of a Norwegian fjord, in the present day, The Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz discover a boarded-up cottage and a girl named Hanne in need of their help. What has happened here? What monster lurks in the woods around the cottage – and beyond?
