A lot happened since I last posted, but I did go to NYCC and I grabbed some intel as well as the videos that popped up over the 4 1/2 days of New York City’s biggest and geekiest annual event.
The End is Nigh! This was the panel I was really looking forward to at NYCC. This show is based on the popular book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. In the book:
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday, to be exact. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to coming rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.
In the panel we learned that we will be hearing a lot of music from Queen. In the book there is a recurring joke that all the music tapes in Crowley’s car are songs from Queen’s greatest music tape. The reason for this is that that the authors, they realized that whenever they were in a car…there was always a greatest music tape in the car. That carried over to the show.
David Tennant’s Crowley the Demon and Michael Sheen’s Aziraphale the Angel, deny that they are close friends, but they have crosses paths over the course of 6000 years and now find themselves clinging to one another in the midst of trying to 1. Find the antichrist, 2. stop the world from ending, and 3. avoid the annoying Gabriel (Played by John Hamm) and his thuggish angel sidekick. Miranda Richardson plays Madame Tracey who can channel Aziraphale. What was evident is that there love amongst the creators and cast. They explained the lunacy of filming this six episode limited series. They would spend a couple of hours filming a scene showing the main characters in Elizabethan times in full Elizabethan outfits at the Globe at the premiere of Hamlet and then a couple of hours later they were somewhere new to film another scene. So, filming this whole universe was a huge undertaking. They even managed to film some of the key footnotes.
With all the clips we saw in the NYCC panel, I think we basically saw an overview of the first season. The most interesting bits evolved around Matt and Sister Maggie. Maggie is a tough, no nonsense nun that ends up being the tether that Matt needs to come back from the brink giving up on everything. Karen and Foggy are back and they too give Matt that support he needs in order to stop Fisk (whose goal is to save his girl from suffering his fate in jail) and..Bullseye. Let me tell you, watching the fight scenes between Matt and Dex aka Bullseye was painful. The Spanish came out of me as Matt was pummeled by inanimate objects. A lot of “Aye dios mio” going on. This will be a great season to watch.
Star Trek: Discovery:
We got to see the whole cast at NYCC and Sonequa was in full effect as she squealed and touted the greatness of Ethan Peck as our new and bearded Spock. We learned that at the core of the season is the mystery of the Red Angel and these seven signals that the crew, headed by Pike (who uses his crew to help figure stuff out), go after. We will also see L’Rell become much more feminine which is evident in her growing out her hair, new attire, and her relationship with Tyler. Then these is Saru. We will meet his sister and see his home planet as we see his character evolve. All in all, all these characters are confronting challenges and we watch them overcome them.
My favorite part revolved around Tilly and Stamitz, Anthony Rapp’s character tells Tilly that she is incandescent because everything she does comes from love. Also, Michelle Yeoh loves playing the sexy Mirror Universe version of Giorgio who works for Section 31. You could tell she was having a good time playing this character that is in the black ops of the Federation and also playing the person that everyone believes is the nice captain Giorgio that everyone thinks she is.
There was casting news at the event, Sonequa’s husband will be on the show.
Gotham – First Look at the final Season:
Yes, Shane West is Bane. But, the best of news from the panel is that in the finale we will jump ahead a decade and we will see Batman. No air date still…who knows what is going on over at FOX.
The show will air on January 16th at 10 pm est on Syfy.
This is not your Saturday morning type of show, it is much darker. We shall see the evolution of Robin to Nightwing and the costumes will evolve from street wear to the classic costumes that fans love. Ahead of the show’s premiere on October 12th, the show was picked up for a second season.
Just so you know, this is a timeline of what’s to come for the DC Streaming Service:
- Young Justice
- Doom Patrol
- Swamp Thing
- Harley Quinn
- We also learned that Krypton will be on the service at the tail end of 2019. Interesting…
The Magicians First Look at Season 4:
The Magicians – We know that at the end of the last season, that the characters (who have new identities) will be dealing with a monster that has jumped into the body of Eliot and we will see what havoc that monster creates for the Magicians and others. Also, the cast will participate in a Facebook Live interaction with fans and host Candis Cayne on Thursday, Oct. 18. The show will air on January 23rd on Syfy.
So, we saw the first episode at NYCC and it was all hopeful until they crossed paths with a certain someone and then that person made the last few minutes heart-wrenching. We did learn that this season, there is no fear of Jamie and Claire separating and that the season would be of them settling down in pre-revolutionary United States and create a home for themselves. The show will air on November 4th.
Remember, there are a lot of new characters to look forward to:
- Maria Doyle Kennedy – Jocasta Cameron
- Ed Speleers – Stephen Bonnet, who is worse than Black Jack Randall.
- Billy Boyd – Gerald Forbes
- Caitlin O’Ryan – Lizzie Wemyss
- Natalie Simpson – Phaedre
- Tim Downie – Governor William Tryon
- Simona Brown – Gayle
- Rollo the Dog
Also, the season was filmed in Scotland.
Like where we are now, in the show the country is divided. In that world, it is divided over Mutant rights. We will get to see Polaris as a child and we to see the history of The Frosts. While we see the Mutant underground vs. the Inner Circle. They’re also introducing the Morlocks into the season, and there’s something really appealing about their society and how they live. Add in the Purifiers and it will be an interesting season. Because they are not really in opposition because they are trying to help the Mutant race, they are at odds at how to make their beliefs come to fruition. Also. there is a chance we will see the X-Men on the show, because even if it is the mythos of the show that the X-Men have dissipated, Jeff Loeb says anything is possible.
Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina:
First up – They cast Juggie’s Mom and Sister!
In the panel we learned that there will be Falice moments, because she is distracting herself from the revelation of Hal being the Black Hood and the issue with the Farm. However, with Gladys and Jellybean back (Gina Gershon will play the Serpent with a GED, Gladys Jones, Trinity Likins will play Jellybean. They will be debut on the December 12th episode and they are recurring characters)m it should be an interesting time for Falice. They are not the only couple who will be having problems.
Varchie fans prepare yourselves, it seems like the these two lovebirds will indeed be having issues. Separation does not always make the heart grow fonder. But, for Archie…Jughead is there for him, while he is fighting for his life.
Bughead fans that loved the Detective Duo in season 1 and in season 3 they are back, but think more like True Detective. They will be back as they investigate an “epidemic in Riverdale.” It is a very dark and twisty mystery.
Reinhart stated that, “It involves everyone in the town, and it’s kind of a crisis.” She added that by the end of episode one, Betty is left in a vulnerable state which ends in a cliffhanger. Dun, dun, duuuuuuuuuun. She also throws herself into her internship and But, there are quite a few mysteries that Betty is involved in.
The big bad of season three is the Gargoyle King that torments the kids of Riverdale.
There is a character from the comics, Evelyn Evernever, that causes trouble for Betty. And her father will pop up, Edgar.
In the throwback episode, the kids play the parents in a story that will focus on the parents when they were in H.S. This episode is the 4th episode and it will air on Halloween.
While both Riverdale and Greendale are in the same universe, these shows are pretty different. This show kind of reminded me of Buffy because there is a level of fun to it, but it is clearly a darker horror-based show. Sabrina is a powerful young woman that is dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a young human woman, but she also has this witch aspect to her life. In the pilot, it is evident that Sabrina is unsure about which world she wants to live in. However, being selfless and brave is at her core. In her world there are her aunts, played by Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis, Zelda (forthright and domineering and much more of the Father-like parent to Sabrina) and Hilda (loves the rebellious side of Sabrina and is much more nurturing) respectively and they have a typical sibling relationship where they work off of each other, but they love one another. Her cousin Ambrose, a pansexual. The actor who plays Ambrose called his characters relationship to Sabrina as “Alfred to Sabrina’s Batman.” Regarding Sabrina’s boyfriend, Harvey, his family has been in Greendale for generations and he continues to be a great boyfriend to Sabrina. Is there a Salem? Yes! But, it is not the Salem of the 90s.
Regarding the other characters:
- Tati Gabrielle – Prudence
- Richard Coyle – Father Blackwood
- Bronson Pinchot – high school principal George Hawthorne
- Michelle Gomez – Plays both Miss Wardell, Sabrina’s teacher, and Madam Satan — whom Michelle says, “…a joy to work with as such rich source material and that her character is more than just evil.
In regards to a crossover, right no. But, down the line…maybe.
The show will air on Netflix on October 26th and will have 10 episodes.
Marvel’s The Runaways:
Now, I know I was not a big fan of the majority of the show, but by the end of the inaugural season…I started to see hope in this group of kids who were cast out of the safe world that they lived in (by their own parents)…into the deep dark world that we all know and love. They eat at Pride soup kitchens and sleep under the underpasses. In regards to Pride, they have a new HQ. I actually work for a charity and let me tell you…nope.
So, the kids are still on the lam, but they finally find a place they can call home and it is the well known Hostel.
While Nico and Karolina are going strong in the second season. Nico has a lot to deal with, but she becomes the leader of the group due to her empathy and independence. Karolina is also trying to get answers about her family and getting comfortable with her powers.
Alex goes on his own journey (due to what happened at the end of season 1 and forms a new kinship that evolves) and he finds a new love interest and she comes in the shape of Darius’s sister-in-law.
Molly wants to be a superhero and have adventures and she does comes in to her own as she is the most street-wise of the group.
Chase is becoming a man in the second season. We also see the growth of Gert and Chase’s relationship, but there is the issue of Gert’s need of medication. Due to the group not having any money, there is no medication. The actor, Sulkin, says that “You never know someone until you live with them.”
In regards of Old Lace, Old Lace finds her place in the group and gets her own story arc.
Parent-wise, Robert is looking for justice. The Wilders want to get out of Pride and get their son back, but they have different ways of doing it.
Casting news – Jan Louis Castellanos who will play Topher.
That’s it for me…
You know what was odd…no Arrowverse shows.
Can’t wait for next year’s Comic-con.
Prior to the Con, the following news dropped:
