In order for Amazon to compete with HBO or Netflix, it is tossing its hat in to the high fantasy genre ring with a Lord of the Rings prequel.
The series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.
JD Payne and Patrick McKay will be the writers for the show and Amazon is betting that they will go toe to toe with D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.
Many believe that the prequel will not revolve around the little folk of the Shire, but on a young Aragorn, while others believe that they may revolve on the many tales in The Silmarillion.
There were promises made to get this show up and running within two years, which makes us believe that we will learn more on the cast and the story in the next few months.
Amazon also announced that the men behind The Avengers: Infinity War movie, The Russo Brothers, will be creating an event series. There were no specifics for that show either.
Only time will tell if we will learn any more information about these two shows.
