The Magicians: A Life in the Day Recap

Last week, we spent a lot of time on Penny and hoe desperate Katie was to keep her love alive and keep him safe. It was heartbreaking and funny because of how Penny was dealing with everything.

This week’s episode centered on Q and Eliot and it was possibly my favorite story line this season. The writers are spending a good amount of time on giving the fans what they want, some wonderfully well-written character driven stories.

Over time, Eliot and Q have learned to depend and rely on one another…even love one another. That was clearly evident in tonight’s episode. So, they go on a quest to find a key of magic in a mosaic in ancient Fillory. It is an impossible task and they end up spending a lifetime in Fillory. Q finds the love of his life, has a son and grand children, and is about the bury Eliot when he finds the tile that allows him to get the key. That is when Jane Chatwin shows up and Q realizes that in order for the future to happen the way it is supposed to happen, he has to hand over the key. Up until Jane’s arrival, I was weepy for Q and Eliot.

However, Q is a smart cookie. He realizes that he has to send a note, with a key, to Margo on the day of her wedding.

This allows Margo to go back in time, due to Jane Chatwin’s time loops, to stop Q and Eliot from going to ancient Fillory with key in hand.

So, there was a cool moment when the show tipped its hat to Doctor Who when Jane and Margo spoke in the clock barrens. Timey Wimey and all. That is when Julia found out from Jane that she had to get the new key from the grave of Jane Chatwin. She saves her friends and the three of them go back to present day Fillory.

The peaches and plums and the note that Q sent to Margo allow their memories of their life together to rush back to them and I got all weepy for them again. It was a good life.

The ancillary story lines were of importance as they mark in changes for the characters:

  1. Margo married the youngest (Fomar) of the tribe of the floating army. He, of course, had to decapitate his older brother (the handsome Micah) who was originally going to marry Julia. Yes, we are talking future serial killer. Margo also locked up er first husband-to-be, which may be a blessing.
  2. Julia finds out that she has the seed of Renard’s magic in her, but she does not want it. You know who does, Alice. Maybe they can figure out how they both can get what they want. The problem here is that Alice is questionable at all levels.
  3. Katie and Penny and have fallen out on all levels. Especially now that she knows that she attempted to commit suicide over Penny for no reason, since he astral projected himself at time of death and technically is not a ghost. Now, she is stuck in a mental health facility with no out in view.

Next episode: Do you like teeth? Quentin faces his most formidable foe yet as Julia helps Alice with a dangerous endeavor.
